최근 전동킥보드 등 개인형 이동수단의 배터리 화재 사고가 전국적으로 잇따르면서 인명 피해가 늘어나고 있다.

지난해에는 경기도 화성의 한 배터리 공장에서 화재가 발생해 23명이 숨졌으며, 올 7월 부산 북구 만덕동 주택에서는 전기 스쿠터 배터리 폭발로 2명이 사망했다.

이어 8월에는 서울 마포구 아파트에서 같은 원인으로 2명이 숨지고 18명이 부상을 당하는 등 크고 작은 사고가 계속되고 있다.

완도군 역시 전동킥보드 이용자가 점차 늘고 있어 가정 내 배터리 화재에 대한 경각심과 예방 활동이 절실해지고 있다.

이에 완도소방서(서장 이민석)는 군민들에게 전동킥보드 화재 예방을 위한 안전 수칙을 반드시 준수해 달라고 당부하고 나섰다.

전동킥보드 배터리 안전 사용 요령으로는 국가 인증을 받은 안전장치가 장착된 제품 사용, 배터리 및 충전기 임의 개조·불법 제품 사용 금지, 충전 중 외출·취침 삼가기, 현관문, 비상구 등 대피 통로 인근 충전 금지, 종이·옷가지 등 가연성 물질 주변 충전 금지, 충전 완료 후 즉시 전원 분리, 습기에 약한 배터리는 건조한 곳 보관 및 장마철 사용 자제 등이 있다.

완도소방서 관계자는 “전동킥보드는 편리한 이동수단이지만 부주의한 충전 습관은 곧 화재로 이어질 수 있다.”며 “군민 여러분께서는 작은 실천으로 가정과 이웃의 안전을 지켜 달라”고 강조했다.

Wando Fire Station Promotes E-Scooter Battery Fire Prevention
Repeated casualties nationwide… Residents urged to follow safety guidelines
Recently, battery fire accidents involving personal mobility devices such as electric scooters have been occurring nationwide, resulting in increasing casualties.
Last year, a fire at a battery factory in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do claimed 23 lives. In July this year, an electric scooter battery explosion at a residence in Mandeok-dong, Buk-gu, Busan, killed two people.
In August, a similar accident at an apartment in Mapo-gu, Seoul left two people dead and 18 injured, demonstrating that such accidents continue to occur.
With the growing number of electric scooter users in Wando County, raising awareness and taking preventive measures against household battery fires has become essential.
In response, the Wando Fire Station (Chief Lee Min-seok) has urged residents to strictly follow safety guidelines to prevent e-scooter battery fires.
Safe usage tips for e-scooter batteries include:
Use only products equipped with nationally certified safety devices
Do not modify batteries or chargers, or use illegal products
Avoid leaving batteries charging while sleeping or away from home
Do not charge near front doors, emergency exits, or other evacuation routes
Keep away from flammable materials such as paper, clothing, or plastic when charging
Unplug immediately after charging to prevent overcharging
Store batteries in dry places and avoid using them during the rainy season
A Wando Fire Station official stated, “E-scooters are convenient means of transportation, but careless charging habits can easily lead to fires. We ask all residents to practice these simple safety measures in their daily lives to protect the safety of their families and neighbors.”
