토종 소나무 사라질 위기… 완도군, 재선충병 내년 3월까지 총력 방제

완도군은 소나무의 집단 고사를 막기 위해 내년 3월까지 전방위적 방제에 총력을 기울인다.

군은 지난 5일 산림청과 협력해 완도읍·군외면 등 발생지뿐 아니라 신지·고금·약산면까지 범위를 넓혀 항공 예찰을 실시했다.

항공 예찰은 넓은 지역을 단시간에 파악할 수 있어 피해목 좌표를 확보하고 지상 정밀조사와 방제로 신속히 이어질 수 있다는 장점이 있다.

소나무 재선충병은 솔수염하늘소가 매개해 나무를 말라죽게 만드는 치명적인 병해충으로, 한 번 확산되면 토종 소나무 숲 전체가 사라질 수도 있다.

군은 지난 상반기에만 의심목·고사목 1,643본을 파쇄·소각하며 피해 확산을 차단해 왔다.

박은재 산림휴양과장은 “재선충병은 토종 소나무를 송두리째 없앨 수 있는 무서운 병해”라며 “군은 항공·지상 예찰과 집중 방제를 병행해 반드시 확산을 막겠다.

주민들께서도 반경 2km 이내 소나무류 반출 금지에 적극 협조해 주시길 부탁드린다.”고 강조했다.

Native Pine Trees in Peril… Wando County to Fight Pine Wilt Disease Until March Next Year
― Expanded Aerial Surveillance with the Korea Forest Service, 1,643 Dead Trees Removed in First Half of the Year ―
Korea’s native pine trees are under serious threat due to climate change and the spread of pine wilt disease.
Wando County is stepping up full-scale efforts to prevent mass die-off of pine forests, carrying out intensive control measures until March next year.
On September 5, the county conducted aerial surveillance in cooperation with the Korea Forest Service, expanding its scope from previously affected areas in Wando-eup and Gunoe-myeon to Shinsi, Gogeum, and Yaksan.
Aerial surveillance allows for wide-area monitoring in a short time, enabling quick identification of damaged trees through GPS coordinates, followed by ground inspections and timely control measures.
Pine wilt disease, spread by pine sawyer beetles, is a fatal forest pest that cuts off the flow of water and nutrients, causing trees to wither and die. Once it spreads, entire native pine forests may be lost.
In the first half of this year alone, Wando County destroyed and disposed of 1,643 suspected and dead pine trees to curb further spread.
Park Eun-jae, head of the Forest Recreation Division, said, “Pine wilt disease is a deadly threat that could wipe out Korea’s native pine trees. The county will carry out both aerial and ground surveillance alongside intensive control measures to block further spread. We ask for residents’ full cooperation, especially in observing the ban on transporting pine trees within a 2 km radius of outbreak areas.”
