제34회 초의상 수상자 선정…한국 차문화 세계화 이끈 공로

위원회는 지난 8월 14일부터 29일까지 전국 차 관련 단체와 대학 차 관련학과, 역대 수상자 등으로부터 후보를 추천받아 9월 9일 심사위원회를 열고 심사를 진행했다.

접수된 후보자 5명의 경력과 공적 사항, 증빙자료 등을 엄정히 검토한 결과 두 명의 수상자가 최종 결정됐다.

경기도 고양 출신의 정인오 수상자는 세계 보이차 10대 인물로 선정된 바 있으며, 한국차연구회 회장, 중국차엽박물관 학술연구위원, 세계차연합회 회장을 역임했다.

그는 한국 차문화의 명품화를 위해 국내외에서 활발히 활동하며 차문화 산업 발전에 크게 기여한 공로가 인정됐다.

서울 중구 출신의 유양석 수상자는 국민대학교 교수와 한국차학회 회장을 지내며 한국 차와 차문화의 세계적 위상을 높였다.

또한 40여 편의 학술 연구 성과를 통해 학술상, 보성군 표창, 하동 지역개발 공로상 등을 수상하며 학계와 지역 발전에 이바지한 점이 높이 평가됐다.

초의상은 다산 정약용과 더불어 조선 후기 차 문화를 꽃피운 초의선사(草衣禪師, 1786~1866)의 뜻을 기리고, 우리 차 문화 발전에 헌신한 인물을 매년 발굴해 시상하는 권위 있는 상이다.

1991년부터 시작된 이 상은 올해로 34회를 맞아, 한국 차 문화의 역사성과 정신을 계승하는 데 중요한 의미를 더하고 있다.

Winners of the 34th Choui Award Announced… Honoring Contributions to the Global Recognition of Korean Tea Culture
The Choui Cultural Festival Organizing Committee (Chairman Jeong Ki-bong) announced on the 16th that Jeong In-o (71) and Yoo Yang-seok (66) have been selected as the recipients of the 34th Choui Award.
From August 14 to 29, the committee received recommendations from tea-related organizations nationwide, universities with tea-related departments, and previous award recipients. The screening committee convened on September 9 to review the five nominated candidates, thoroughly examining their careers, achievements, and supporting materials. After careful deliberation, two final awardees were chosen.
Jeong In-o, born in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, was recognized as one of the “Top 10 Global Puer Tea Figures.” He has served as Chairman of the Korean Tea Research Association, Academic Research Committee Member of the China Tea Leaf Museum, and President of the World Tea Union (WTU). His efforts to elevate Korean tea culture and promote premium tea domestically and internationally have earned him recognition as a recipient of this year’s Choui Award.
Yoo Yang-seok, born in Jung-gu, Seoul, is a former professor at Kookmin University and former president of the Korean Tea Society. He has played a significant role in enhancing global recognition of Korean tea and tea culture. Through more than 40 academic research publications, he has also received the Academic Achievement Award, commendations from Boseong County, and the Hadong Regional Development Merit Award, contributing both to academic advancement and regional development.
The Choui Award commemorates Venerable Choui (1786–1866), who, along with Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, was instrumental in flourishing tea culture in late Joseon. Since its establishment in 1991, the award has annually honored individuals who have dedicated themselves to the development of Korean tea culture. Marking its 34th year, the award continues to play a meaningful role in preserving and passing down the history and spirit of Korean tea.
