“통합이 곧 상권의 미래”… 김영록 지사, 말바우시장서 민심 청취

전남·광주 행정통합 논의가 본격화되는 가운데 김영록 전라남도지사가 광주 최대 전통시장인 말바우시장을 찾아 현장 민심을 청취하며 상권 활성화 의지를 다졌다.

김 지사는 22일 말바우시장을 방문해 전남·광주 행정통합 비전을 공유하고, 통합이 지역 상권과 경제에 미칠 영향과 기대효과에 대해 상인 및 이용객들의 다양한 의견을 들었다.

말바우시장은 담양·곡성·장성 등 인근 전남 북부권 주민들도 농수산물을 직접 구매·판매하는 광주 최대 전통시장으로, 전남과 광주를 잇는 생활·경제 공동체의 상징적 공간이다. 북부권 지역경제의 흐름과 소비 심리를 체감할 수 있는 대표 상권으로 평가받고 있다.

이날 김 지사는 박창순 말바우시장상인회장, 한승주 전남도상인연합회장 등과 만나 행정통합 추진 과정에서의 애로사항과 건의사항을 경청했다.
상인들은 통합 이후 상권 확대와 물류·교통·관광 연계 강화에 대한 기대를 나타내는 한편, 소상공인 지원정책의 지속성과 체감도 제고를 주문했다.

김 지사는 현장에서 온누리상품권으로 지역 특산품을 직접 구매하며 상인들을 격려하고, 시장을 찾은 시민들과 인사를 나누며 전통시장 이용 확대를 당부했다.
또한 전남·광주 북부권 전통시장 공동 활성화 방안에 대해서도 현장 의견을 폭넓게 수렴했다.

김 지사는 “전남·광주 행정통합은 단순한 행정구역 결합을 넘어 지역 상권을 발전시키는 핵심 성장 동력이 될 것”이라며 “생활권과 경제권이 이미 하나로 움직이고 있는 만큼, 통합을 통해 새로운 도약의 기반을 마련하겠다.”고 강조했다.

이어 “전통시장이 지역경제의 뿌리인 만큼 더 많은 도민과 시민이 시장을 찾아 활기를 불어넣어 주길 바란다.”고 말했다.

한편 전라남도는 행정통합 논의 과정에서 지역 상공인과의 지속적인 소통을 통해 현장 중심의 상권 활성화 정책을 마련해 나갈 방침이다.

Amid growing discussions on administrative integration between Jeonnam and Gwangju, Kim Young-rok, Governor of South Jeolla Province, visited Malbau Market, the largest traditional market in Gwangju, to hear local voices and reaffirm his commitment to revitalizing regional commerce.
On the 22nd, Governor Kim toured Malbau Market to share the vision for Jeonnam–Gwangju administrative integration and to gather diverse opinions from merchants and visitors regarding its potential impact and expected benefits for local businesses and the regional economy.
Malbau Market is Gwangju’s largest traditional market and serves as a key commercial hub frequented by residents from nearby northern Jeonnam counties such as Damyang, Gokseong, and Jangseong, who directly buy and sell agricultural and marine products. It is widely regarded as a symbolic space linking the daily life and economic communities of Jeonnam and Gwangju, and as a representative marketplace reflecting the economic trends and consumer sentiment of the northern region.
During the visit, Governor Kim met with Park Chang-soon, President of the Malbau Market Merchants’ Association, and Han Seung-joo, President of the Jeonnam Federation of Merchants, listening carefully to their concerns and suggestions regarding the integration process.
Merchants expressed expectations for expanded commercial zones and strengthened logistics, transportation, and tourism linkages following integration, while also calling for sustained and more tangible support policies for small business owners.
Governor Kim purchased local specialty products using Onnuri gift certificates to encourage merchants and greeted shoppers, urging greater use of traditional markets. He also collected a wide range of on-site opinions on joint revitalization measures for traditional markets in the northern Jeonnam–Gwangju area.
“Jeonnam–Gwangju administrative integration goes beyond a simple merger of jurisdictions; it will serve as a key growth engine for advancing regional commercial districts,” Governor Kim stated. “As living and economic spheres are already functioning as one, integration will lay the foundation for a new leap forward.”
He added, “Traditional markets are the roots of the local economy. I hope more residents and citizens will visit and help restore vitality to these markets.”
Meanwhile, the South Jeolla Provincial Government plans to continue close communication with local business communities throughout the integration discussions and to develop field-oriented policies aimed at revitalizing regional commercial districts.
