여름철 야간에 순찰차를 운전하다 보면 가슴을 쓸어내리는 아찔한 순간을 종종 마주한다. 찌는 듯한 폭염을 피해 늦은 밤까지 경운기를 몰고 일을 다녀오시거나 전동스쿠터를 타고 이동하는 어르신들과 도로에서 마주칠 때다.

어두컴컴한 시골 국도와 농로는 가로등이 드물어 운전자의 시야가 매우 제한적이다. 여기에 여름철 갑작스러운 소나기까지 내리면 전방의 물체를 식별하기는 더욱 어려워진다.

특히 등화장치가 없거나 흙과 먼지로 오염된 농기계, 어두운색 옷을 입은 전동스쿠터 운전자는 차량이 거의 바짝 다가간 뒤에야 눈에 들어오는 경우가 많다. 현장에서 이러한 위험을 목격할 때마다 한순간의 방심이 대형 추돌사고로 이어질 수 있다는 사실을 절감한다.

이러한 사고를 예방하는 가장 확실한 방법은 ‘시인성’, 즉 다른 운전자의 눈에 잘 보이도록 하는 것이다.

농기계나 전동스쿠터 뒷면에 야광 스티커나 반사지 한 장만 붙여도 안전에 큰 도움이 된다. 뒤따르는 차량 운전자가 멀리서부터 반사되는 빛을 확인하고 미리 속도를 줄이거나 충분한 안전거리를 확보할 수 있기 때문이다.

경찰은 현장 순찰 중 농기계와 전동스쿠터 뒷면에 반사지를 부착해 드리고, 야간에 이동할 때는 어두운색 옷보다 밝은색 옷을 착용하도록 안내하고 있다. 여름철 농기계 교통사고 예방을 위한 반사지 부착과 야간 순찰 활동도 지속해서 강화하고 있다.

하지만 경찰의 예방 활동만으로 모든 사고를 막을 수는 없다. 자동차 운전자는 시골 국도와 농로를 운행할 때 언제든 농기계나 전동스쿠터가 나타날 수 있다는 점을 염두에 두고 반드시 속도를 줄여야 한다. 농기계와 전동스쿠터 이용자도 등화장치가 정상적으로 작동하는지 확인하고, 반사지 부착과 밝은색 옷 착용 등 기본적인 안전수칙을 지켜야 한다.

순찰차 운전석에서 바라보는 지역의 모든 도로가 언제나 안전하기를 바란다. 작지만 확실한 안전장치인 야광 반사지 한 장이 이번 여름 우리 부모님과 이웃의 소중한 생명을 지키는 든든한 방패가 되기를 기대한다.

A Single Reflective Sticker Can Save a Precious Life
While driving a patrol car at night during the summer, I occasionally encounter frightening moments that make my heart skip a beat. This often happens when I come across elderly residents driving cultivators home after working late to avoid the scorching daytime heat or traveling along the road on mobility scooters.
Rural highways and farm roads are often poorly lit, with few streetlights, severely limiting drivers’ visibility. When a sudden summer shower begins, it becomes even more difficult to identify objects and people ahead.
Agricultural machinery without functioning lights—or covered in dirt and dust—and mobility scooter users wearing dark clothing may remain virtually invisible until a vehicle is dangerously close. Whenever I witness such hazards in the field, I am reminded that a momentary lapse in attention can lead to a serious rear-end collision.
The most effective way to prevent these accidents is to improve visibility—that is, to ensure that road users can be clearly seen by approaching drivers.
Even a single reflective sticker or strip attached to the rear of a cultivator or mobility scooter can significantly improve safety. Its reflected light allows drivers approaching from behind to notice the vehicle from a distance, slow down in advance, and maintain a safe following distance.
During patrols, police officers attach reflective strips to the rear of agricultural machinery and mobility scooters and encourage residents to wear bright-colored clothing instead of dark clothing when traveling at night. Police are also continuing to strengthen nighttime patrols and reflective-strip distribution programs to prevent summer accidents involving agricultural machinery.
However, police prevention efforts alone cannot stop every accident. When driving on rural highways and farm roads, motorists must reduce their speed and remain alert, knowing that agricultural machinery or mobility scooters may appear at any time. Users of agricultural machinery and mobility scooters should also ensure that their lights are working properly and follow basic safety measures, such as attaching reflective strips and wearing bright-colored clothing.
From the driver’s seat of a patrol car, I sincerely hope that every road in our community remains safe. May a single reflective strip—a small but effective safety device—serve as a reliable shield protecting the precious lives of our parents, neighbors, and fellow residents this summer.
