Ahead of the Chuseok holiday, when cooking and the use of electricity and gas are expected to increase, the Haenam Fire Station has launched a fire prevention campaign at a local traditional market.
The Haenam Fire Station of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Fire Headquarters, headed by Fire Chief Jeong Hyeong-jung, announced that it conducted a Chuseok fire prevention campaign on September 21 at the Haenam Five-Day Market to raise fire safety awareness among merchants and market visitors.
About 50 firefighters and volunteer firefighters from the Haenam Fire Station participated in the campaign.
Starting from the county public square and moving through the Haenam Five-Day Market area, participants carried out a street campaign to inform local residents and merchants about essential fire prevention measures.
The campaign particularly emphasized the increased risk of fire during the Chuseok holiday, when households tend to use more cooking appliances, electricity and gas while preparing holiday meals. Fire officials warned that even a small act of carelessness could potentially lead to a serious fire.
The campaign focused on ▲providing fire prevention guidelines for the Chuseok holiday ▲promoting the idea of giving residential fire safety equipment as gifts to family members back home and ▲encouraging registration for the “Fire Evacuation Safety Call” service.
The Haenam Fire Station stressed the importance of equipping homes with residential fire safety devices, including fire extinguishers and standalone smoke alarms, to enable a prompt response during the early stages of a fire.
The campaign also encouraged people visiting their parents and relatives during the holiday to give not only traditional gifts but also “the gift of safety” by providing fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.
Residents were also encouraged to register for the “Fire Evacuation Safety Call” service, which is designed to support prompt evacuation and emergency response in the event of a fire.
The fire station noted that traditional markets require particular attention to fire safety because shops are densely concentrated, allowing flames to spread rapidly to neighboring businesses if a fire breaks out. Merchants were therefore urged to conduct voluntary safety inspections and practice fire prevention measures on a regular basis.
The campaign went beyond promoting fire safety.
Participants purchased daily necessities at the Haenam Five-Day Market and patronized nearby restaurants, contributing to efforts to revitalize the traditional market and surrounding commercial districts ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
“During Chuseok, the use of cooking appliances, electricity and gas increases significantly, so special care is needed to ensure that even a small act of carelessness does not lead to a fire,” Fire Chief Jeong Hyeong-jung said.
“I hope every family and community will make fire prevention part of their daily lives and enjoy a safe and happy Chuseok holiday,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Haenam Fire Station plans to continue fire prevention campaigns and safety management activities at traditional markets and other public facilities throughout the Chuseok holiday period to help residents and holiday travelers enjoy a safe holiday.
