The Haenam Office of Education of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special Metropolitan City provided a summer vacation program combining group counseling and healing activities to support the psychological and emotional well-being of local students.
The education office announced on August 7 that it held the summer vacation program, “Wee Can Do It! Together, We Can,” for elementary and middle school students at its facilities on July 30 and August 6.
The program was designed to minimize gaps in psychological support during the school vacation and help students improve their self-understanding, communication skills, and sense of community through group activities with their peers.
Elementary school students participated in a group counseling session titled “Wee Mind: Understanding Your Emotions and Mine.” They learned about the meaning of emotions and created their own emotion-themed emojis, developing a better understanding of how to recognize and express a wide range of feelings.
The students also listened to their friends and took part in activities designed to help them understand one another’s emotions, strengthening empathy and peer relationships.
Middle school students joined the “Wee Great Me: Building a Positive Self-Image” program. They explored their personalities and strengths, discovered positive qualities within themselves, and developed greater confidence and self-esteem.
Healing activities aimed at easing emotional tension and relieving stress were offered in the afternoon.
Elementary school students made terrarium candles and plaster air fresheners, while middle school students created teddy-bear-shaped doorbells using glass-art techniques. By completing their projects, the students exercised concentration and creativity while gaining a sense of accomplishment.
“One student said, “Talking with my friends helped me learn how to express my emotions. The craft activities were also fun, and the program gave me a wonderful memory during summer vacation.”
Superintendent Cho Yeon-ju said, “It is extremely important to closely monitor and support students’ mental health, even during school vacations. I hope this program offered students a valuable opportunity to better understand themselves and grow together with their peers.”
“We will continue to offer a variety of counseling programs that support students’ psychological and emotional well-being and will actively help them grow up healthy and happy,” she added.
Students’ emotional difficulties are not limited to the school term. Summer vacation programs should therefore lead to continued counseling and follow-up support rather than ending as one-time activities. In particular, a comprehensive support system connecting schools, families, Wee Centers, and professional agencies should be established for students showing signs of emotional distress or crisis.
