남도 정원서 즐기는 여름 힐링여행…고흥 쑥섬·해남 비원 등 연계 관광

고흥 쑥섬과 해남 비원, 담양 죽화경 등 남도의 특색 있는 정원을 둘러보며 자연과 정원문화를 체험하는 여름철 정원관광 프로그램이 운영된다.

전남광주통합특별시는 여름 휴가철을 맞아 국가정원과 지방정원, 민간정원, 사립수목원 등을 연계한 지역·계절·주제별 정원관광 프로그램을 마련했다고 밝혔다.

이번 프로그램은 국립정원문화원과의 협약을 바탕으로 지난 5월부터 운영되고 있다. 관광객이 자유롭게 참여하는 ‘당일 스탬프 투어’와 전문 해설사가 동행하는 ‘체류형 정원여행’으로 나눠 진행된다.

당일 스탬프 투어는 각기 다른 풍경과 특색을 지닌 민간정원 35곳을 일정에 구애받지 않고 자율적으로 방문하는 방식이다.

참가자가 10곳과 20곳, 35곳을 각각 방문한 뒤 스탬프가 찍힌 투어북을 국립정원문화원에 제출하면 완주 단계에 따라 기관 로고가 새겨진 기념주화를 받을 수 있다. 완주자는 올해 하반기 열리는 ‘2026 민간정원 페스타’에도 초청될 예정이다.

여러 정원을 여유 있게 둘러보고 싶은 관광객을 위해 1박 2일과 2박 3일 체류형 코스도 운영한다. 전문 해설사가 동행해 정원의 조성 배경과 식물, 지역문화 등을 설명하면서 단순 관람을 넘어 정원의 가치와 이야기를 함께 체험하도록 구성했다.

여름철에는 수국을 중심으로 한 정원여행을 즐길 수 있다. 고흥 쑥섬과 장수호힐링정원, 보성 성림정원, 장흥 월넛치유정원, 해남 비원과 포레스트수목원 등에서는 형형색색의 수국이 어우러진 여름 정원 풍경을 감상할 수 있다.

유럽 수국이 펼쳐지는 담양 죽화경에서는 오는 8월 30일까지 ‘눈꽃정원 플라워쇼’가 열린다.

당일 스탬프 투어 참여 방법은 국립정원문화원 누리집에서 확인할 수 있다. 스탬프 투어북은 참여 민간정원과 국립정원문화원에 비치돼 있으며, 체류형 정원여행은 국립정원문화원(061-380-1242)을 통해 안내받을 수 있다.

문미란 전남광주통합특별시 산림휴양과장은 “생활 속에서 정원을 만날 수 있도록 1만 개 정원을 조성해 ‘숲속의 도시’를 브랜드화하겠다”며 “이번 프로그램을 정원문화의 가치를 높이고 1천만 정원관광 시대를 선도하는 계기로 삼겠다.”고 말했다.

다만 정원관광이 일회성 방문 행사에 머물지 않기 위해서는 참여 정원의 개방일과 운영시간, 입장료, 교통편 등을 정확히 안내해야 한다. 정원 인근 숙박·음식·농특산물·체험시설과 연계해 관광객의 체류시간과 지역 소비를 늘리는 운영전략도 필요하다.

특히 ‘1천만 정원관광’과 ‘1만 개 정원’ 목표에 대해서는 연도별 조성계획과 예산, 정원별 방문객 집계 기준, 지역경제 파급효과 등을 투명하게 공개해야 한다.

A summer garden tourism program is offering visitors an opportunity to experience nature and garden culture by touring some of southern Korea’s most distinctive gardens, including Goheung Ssukseom, Haenam Biwon and Damyang Jukhwagyeong.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City Government announced that it has launched regional, seasonal and themed garden tourism programs linking national gardens, local government-run gardens, private gardens and privately operated arboretums for the summer vacation season.
The programs have been operating since May under an agreement with the National Garden Culture Institute. They are divided into a self-guided “Same-Day Stamp Tour” and overnight garden tours accompanied by professional guides.
The Same-Day Stamp Tour allows participants to visit 35 private gardens, each with its own scenery and character, freely and at their own pace without being bound by a fixed itinerary.
Participants who visit 10, 20 or all 35 gardens and submit their completed stamp tour booklet to the National Garden Culture Institute will receive commemorative coins bearing the institute’s logo according to each level of completion. Those who complete the tour will also be invited to the 2026 Private Garden Festa, scheduled for the second half of this year.
For visitors wishing to explore the gardens at a more leisurely pace, one-night, two-day and two-night, three-day programs are also available. Professional guides accompany participants and explain the gardens’ history, plants and local culture, allowing visitors to experience their stories and cultural value beyond simply viewing the scenery.
During the summer, visitors can enjoy garden tours centered on hydrangeas. Colorful summer landscapes filled with hydrangeas can be seen at Goheung Ssukseom, Goheung Jangsuho Healing Garden, Boseong Seongnim Garden, Jangheung Walnut Healing Garden, Haenam Biwon and Haenam Forest Arboretum.
At Damyang Jukhwagyeong, where European hydrangeas are in bloom, the “Snowflake Garden Flower Show” will continue through August 30.
Information on participating in the Same-Day Stamp Tour is available on the National Garden Culture Institute’s website. Stamp tour booklets are provided at participating private gardens and the institute. Moon Mi-ran, director of the Forest Recreation Division of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City Government, said, “We will establish 10,000 gardens so that people can encounter gardens in their everyday lives and develop our identity as a ‘city in the forest.’ We will use this garden tourism program as an opportunity to enhance the value of garden culture and lead an era of 10 million garden tourists.”
However, to prevent garden tourism from becoming a one-time attraction, accurate information must be provided on each participating garden’s opening days, operating hours, admission fees and transportation options. Strategies are also needed to extend visitors’ stays and increase local spending by linking the gardens with nearby accommodations, restaurants, local agricultural products and hands-on experience programs.
In particular, the government should transparently disclose its annual implementation plans and budgets for the goals of attracting “10 million garden tourists” and creating “10,000 gardens,” along with garden-specific visitor-counting standards and the programs’ economic impact on local communities.
