광주 군공항 이전 예비이전후보지로 무안군 망운면이 공식 선정되면서, 전남 서남권의 미래를 둘러싼 중대한 분기점이 형성되고 있다.

이번 선정은 국방부와 전남도, 광주시, 무안군이 참여한 협의 과정과 범정부 차원의 조정을 거쳐 이뤄진 것으로, 사실상 오랜 기간 답보 상태에 머물던 군공항 이전 논의가 본 궤도에 진입했음을 의미한다.

그 배경에는 단순한 행정적 결정 이상의 현실이 놓여 있다.
현재 무안은 지역 경제의 핵심 축이었던 공항과 관광 산업이 기대에 미치지 못하면서 구조적 침체 국면에 접어든 상태다.

공항을 중심으로 형성됐던 숙박업과 음식업, 관광 서비스 산업은 수요 기반이 약화되며 장기 침체에 빠졌고, 이는 다시 소비 감소와 인구 유출로 이어지는 악순환을 낳고 있다.
인근 주요 관광 도시들이 회복세를 보이는 가운데 무안만이 뚜렷한 반등을 만들지 못하고 있다는 점은, 단순한 경기 문제가 아니라 구조적 한계에 직면해 있음을 보여준다.

이러한 상황에서 군공항 이전은 단순한 개발 사업을 넘어 지역 경제의 구조를 재편할 수 있는 변수로 떠오르고 있다.
군공항 이전이 현실화될 경우 대규모 국가 재정이 투입되고, 도로와 철도, 전력 등 기반시설 확충이 동시에 진행될 가능성이 높다.
더 나아가 항공과 물류, 산업 기능이 결합된 복합 거점 형성이 가능해지면서, 기존의 단편적인 관광 중심 구조에서 벗어나 보다 입체적인 지역 발전 모델로 전환될 여지가 생긴다.

특히 무안국제공항과의 연계가 이루어질 경우, 현재 활용도가 낮은 공항 기능을 재정비하고 서남권 항공 거점으로 도약할 수 있는 기반도 마련될 수 있다.

전라남도는 이번 예비이전후보지 선정을 계기로 주민 의견을 충분히 수렴하고, 이전 후보지 선정과 주변지역 지원계획 수립 등 후속 절차를 단계적으로 추진할 방침이다.
또한 무안군민의 입장에서 국가 차원의 지원을 이끌어내겠다는 입장을 밝히며, 단순한 이전이 아닌 지역 발전 전략으로 접근하겠다는 방향을 제시했다.

결국 이번 군공항 이전 논의는 찬반의 문제가 아니라, 현재의 침체된 구조를 유지할 것인지, 아니면 새로운 발전 경로를 선택할 것인지에 대한 선택의 문제로 귀결되고 있다.

With Mangun-myeon in Muan County officially selected as the preliminary candidate site for the relocation of the Gwangju military airbase, a critical turning point has emerged for the future of southwestern Jeonnam.
This decision is not merely the beginning of a national project, but a potential catalyst that could fundamentally restructure Muan’s long-stagnant local economy.
According to Jeollanam-do, the Ministry of National Defense announced on the 2nd that Mangun-myeon in Muan has been selected as the preliminary relocation candidate site for the Gwangju military airbase.
The designation follows extensive consultations among the Ministry of National Defense, Jeollanam-do, Gwangju City, and Muan County, along with coordination at the central government level—signaling that a long-delayed relocation process has now entered a substantive phase.
Behind this decision lies a reality that goes beyond administrative procedure.
Muan is currently facing a structural economic downturn, as its core pillars—aviation and tourism—have failed to meet expectations.
Muan International Airport, once envisioned as a gateway for international routes and tourism growth, has underperformed significantly, with limited flight demand and route constraints leading to a broader contraction of local commercial activity.
Industries that developed around the airport—hospitality, dining, and tourism services—have suffered prolonged stagnation due to weak demand, creating a vicious cycle of declining consumption and population outflow.
While neighboring cities have shown signs of recovery, Muan’s inability to rebound highlights not just a temporary downturn, but a deeper structural limitation.
In this context, the relocation of the military airbase emerges as a variable capable of reshaping the region’s economic structure.
If realized, the project is expected to bring substantial national investment, alongside simultaneous expansion of infrastructure such as roads, railways, and power systems.
It also opens the possibility of establishing a multi-functional hub combining aviation, logistics, and industry—marking a transition from a fragmented tourism-based economy to a more integrated and diversified development model.
In particular, integration with Muan International Airport could help reposition the currently underutilized facility as a key aviation hub for the southwestern region.
This, in turn, could transform the tourism industry from short-term visitation to a more sustainable, stay-oriented and industry-linked model.
However, the relocation is also expected to generate social friction due to concerns over noise, environmental impact, and property rights.

As tourism, commerce, and population continue to decline simultaneously, the absence of decisive action could accelerate the risk of regional extinction.
Conversely, embracing the relocation as a catalyst for change—despite its challenges—could open the door to renewed growth.

While the relocation may not be a perfect solution, it remains one of the most realistic and powerful options available to alter the region’s current trajectory.
