“호국의 제향, 국가유산으로 간다.”… 대흥사 표충사, 서산대사 춘계제향 봉행

호국불교의 상징적 성지인 전남 해남 두륜산 자락의 대흥사 표충사에서 서산대사의 정신을 기리는 춘계제향이 봉행된다.
대한불교조계종 제22교구본사 대흥사는 오는 4월 11일 오전 10시, 경내 표충사에서 ‘불기 2560년 서산대사 탄신 506주년 춘계제향’을 개최한다고 밝혔다.

이번 제향은 임진왜란 당시 승병을 이끌고 나라를 지킨 서산대사의 호국애민 정신을 기리는 동시에, 표충사 고유의 향례 전통을 체계적으로 복원하고 이를 국가적 문화유산으로 승격시키기 위한 중요한 전환점으로 주목된다.

행사는 오전 10시부터 11시까지 춘계제향이 진행되며, 이어 11시부터 11시 30분까지 법요식, 이후 점심공양 순으로 이어진다.
이번 행사는 유네스코 세계문화유산 대흥사 경내 표충사에서 열리며, 대흥사 표충사향례보존회가 주관한다.

특히 이번 행사에서 주목되는 지점은 ‘향례의 국가무형유산 지정 추진’이다.
표충사 향례는 조선시대부터 이어져 온 호국 제향 의식으로, 불교 의례와 유교식 제례가 결합된 독특한 전통문화 형태를 지니고 있다.
그러나 그 가치에 비해 체계적인 보존과 제도적 보호는 미흡한 실정이었다.

이에 따라 대흥사와 표충사향례보존회는 향례의 역사적 정통성과 의례적 완결성을 기반으로 국가무형유산 등재를 목표로 한 자료 정리, 의식 복원, 전승 체계 구축 등에 힘을 쏟고 있다.
지역 불교계와 문화계, 전문가들이 함께 참여하는 복원 작업은 단순한 재현을 넘어 ‘살아있는 전통’으로서의 계승을 지향하고 있다.

서산대사는 단순한 종교 지도자를 넘어 국가적 위기 속에서 민중과 함께한 실천적 지도자로 평가되며, 그의 정신은 대흥사를 중심으로 현재까지 이어지고 있다.
표충사는 그 상징적 공간으로서, 호국과 공동체 정신을 동시에 담아내는 역사적 현장이다.

대흥사 관계자는 “표충사 향례는 단순한 제사가 아니라, 국가와 공동체를 위한 헌신의 정신을 되새기는 살아있는 문화유산”이라며 “국가무형유산 지정을 통해 그 가치를 공인받고, 후대에 온전히 전승하는 것이 목표”라고 밝혔다.

이번 춘계제향은 과거의 전통을 기리는 데 그치지 않고, 이를 국가적 자산으로 끌어올리기 위한 실천의 장이라는 점에서 그 의미가 더욱 크다.

A spring memorial ritual honoring the spirit of Seosan Daesa will be held at Pyochungsa Shrine within Daeheungsa, located at the foot of Mt. Duryunsan in Haenam, a symbolic site of patriotic Buddhism.
Daeheungsa, the 22nd Head Temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, announced that it will host the “Spring Memorial Ceremony Commemorating the 506th Birth Anniversary of Seosan Daesa (B.E. 2560)” on April 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Pyochungsa Shrine within its grounds.
This ceremony not only commemorates the patriotic and people-centered spirit of Seosan Daesa—who led monk soldiers during the Imjin War—but is also drawing attention as a significant turning point aimed at systematically restoring the unique ritual traditions of Pyochungsa and elevating them to the status of national cultural heritage.
The event will begin with the spring memorial rite from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a Buddhist ceremonial service (Dharma ritual) from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and conclude with a communal meal offering. The ceremony will take place at Pyochungsa within Daeheungsa, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed temple, and is organized by the Pyochungsa Ritual Preservation Society.
A key highlight of this year’s ceremony is the active push for designation of the ritual as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Pyochungsa ritual, rooted in the Joseon Dynasty, represents a unique cultural form that blends Buddhist liturgical practices with Confucian ancestral rites. Despite its historical and cultural significance, systematic preservation and institutional recognition have remained insufficient.
In response, Daeheungsa and the Pyochungsa Ritual Preservation Society are making dedicated efforts toward national designation. These include compiling historical documentation, restoring ritual procedures, and establishing a sustainable transmission system. The initiative involves collaboration among the local Buddhist community, cultural experts, and scholars, aiming not merely at reconstruction but at preserving the ritual as a “living tradition.”
Seosan Daesa is recognized not only as a religious leader but also as a practical leader who stood with the people during times of national crisis. His legacy continues to be upheld at Daeheungsa, with Pyochungsa serving as a symbolic site embodying both patriotic spirit and communal values.
An official from Daeheungsa stated, “The Pyochungsa ritual is not merely an ancestral rite, but a living cultural heritage that reflects devotion to the nation and the community. Our goal is to achieve official recognition as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage and ensure its full transmission to future generations.”
