“전국 30곳 중 절반이 전남광주”…‘아름다운 민간정원’ 15곳 전국 최다

전남광주통합특별시의 민간정원 15곳이 산림청과 한국수목원정원관리원이 선정한 ‘2026 대한민국 아름다운 민간정원 30선’에 이름을 올렸다. 전국 선정 정원의 절반에 해당하는 규모로, 시·도 가운데 가장 많은 것으로 나타났다.

전남광주통합특별시에 따르면 이번 선정은 전국 184개 민간정원을 대상으로 서류심사와 외부 전문가 심사, 국민 온라인 투표 등을 거쳐 진행됐다.

전남광주에 등록된 민간정원 34곳 가운데 22곳이 신청했으며, 국민 2만여 명이 참여한 온라인 투표 결과 등을 종합해 최종 15곳이 선정됐다.

‘대한민국 아름다운 민간정원’ 선정은 2년마다 진행된다. 전남광주에서는 2024년 10곳이 선정된 데 이어 올해는 15곳으로 5곳 늘었다.

선정된 정원은 특성에 따라 5개 유형으로 구분됐다.
‘풍류와 정취를 담은 정원’에는 구례 반야원·쌍산재, 보성 갈멜정원, 화순 솔매음정원 등 4곳이 선정됐다.
‘전원의 낭만을 즐기는 정원’에는 여수 꿈꾸는 정원, 함평 함평천지 몽베르 등 2곳이 이름을 올렸다.
‘예술과 문화가 있는 정원’에는 순천 화가의 정원산책, 고흥 하담정, 해남 산이정원 등 3곳이 선정됐다.
‘쉼과 회복을 선사하는 정원’에는 고흥 힐링파크 쑥섬쑥섬, 보성 성림정원·꿈꾸는 숲 선유원, 장흥 하늘빛 수목정원 등 4곳이 포함됐다.
‘특별한 테마를 가진 정원’에는 담양 죽화경, 화순 무등산 바우정원 등 2곳이 선정됐다.
특히 해남에서는 산이면에 위치한 산이정원이 ‘예술과 문화가 있는 정원’ 유형에 이름을 올리면서 전국적인 민간정원 관광자원으로 주목받게 됐다.

선정된 정원에는 산림청과 한국수목원정원관리원이 ‘대한민국 아름다운 민간정원’ 명패를 수여하고 누리집 등을 통한 홍보를 지원한다.
전남광주통합특별시는 2027년에도 민간정원 보완사업과 페스타 신청을 받아 지원할 계획이다.

통합특별시는 민간정원을 생활권 정원문화의 거점이자 지역소멸에 대응할 관광자원으로 육성하기 위해 전국 최초로 ‘예쁜정원 콘테스트’를 추진해왔다.

콘테스트를 통해 지금까지 우수정원 68곳을 발굴했으며, 이 가운데 15곳은 민간정원으로 등록됐다. 민간정원 보완사업과 페스타 지원 등을 통해 민간이 조성한 정원을 지역 관광자원과 연계하는 사업도 추진하고 있다.

문미란 전남광주통합특별시 산림휴양과장은 “민관이 협력해 등록·운영하는 정원이 전국적으로 인정받게 돼 뜻깊다”며 “민간정원이 시민에게 쉼과 치유 공간을 제공하고 지역소멸에 대응하는 관광자원으로 자리 잡도록 지원하겠다.”고 말했다.

Fifteen private gardens in the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City have been named among the “30 Most Beautiful Private Gardens in Korea for 2026,” selected by the Korea Forest Service and the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute.
The 15 gardens account for half of all gardens selected nationwide, giving Jeonnam-Gwangju the largest number among metropolitan cities and provinces.
According to the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, the selection process evaluated 184 private gardens nationwide through document reviews, assessments by external experts and an online public vote.
Of the 34 registered private gardens in Jeonnam-Gwangju, 22 applied for consideration. After combining the results of the evaluations and an online vote involving more than 20,000 people, 15 gardens were ultimately selected.
The “Most Beautiful Private Gardens in Korea” are selected every two years. Ten gardens from Jeonnam-Gwangju were selected in 2024, while the number increased to 15 this year.
The selected gardens are divided into five categories according to their distinctive characteristics.
In the “Gardens of Elegance and Scenic Charm” category, four gardens were selected: Banyawon and Ssangsanjae in Gurye, Carmel Garden in Boseong and Solmaeeum Garden in Hwasun.
In the “Gardens of Romantic Rural Life” category, two gardens were selected: Dreaming Garden in Yeosu and Hampyeong Cheonji Montvert in Hampyeong.
Three gardens were selected in the “Gardens of Art and Culture” category: Painter’s Garden Walk in Suncheon, Hadamjeong in Goheung and Sani Garden in Haenam.
Four gardens were named in the “Gardens of Rest and Healing” category: Healing Park Ssukseom Ssukseom in Goheung, Seongnim Garden and Dreaming Forest Seonyuwon in Boseong, and Haneulbit Arboretum Garden in Jangheung.
In the “Gardens with Unique Themes” category, Jukhwagyeong in Damyang and Mudeungsan Bau Garden in Hwasun were selected.
Notably, Sani Garden in Sani-myeon, Haenam, was selected in the “Gardens of Art and Culture” category, raising expectations that it will gain further recognition as a nationally prominent private garden and tourism destination.
The Korea Forest Service and the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute will present each selected garden with an official plaque recognizing it as one of Korea’s Beautiful Private Gardens. The gardens will also receive promotional support through official websites and other channels.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City plans to continue supporting private gardens in 2027 through garden improvement projects and private garden festivals.
The city has been working to develop private gardens as tourism resources that can help address regional population decline while also serving as hubs for garden culture in local communities.
As part of these efforts, it launched Korea’s first “Beautiful Garden Contest,” through which 68 outstanding gardens have been identified. Of these, 15 have subsequently been registered as private gardens.
The city is also supporting private garden improvement projects and festivals to better connect privately created gardens with regional tourism.
Moon Mi-ran, director of the Forest Recreation Division of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, said, “It is especially meaningful that gardens registered and operated through public-private cooperation have received nationwide recognition.”
“We will continue to support private gardens so that they can provide residents with places for rest and healing while establishing themselves as tourism resources that can help regions respond to population decline,” Moon said.
