전교생이 26명인 해남 황산초등학교에서 전국학생과학발명품경진대회 수상자 2명이 나왔다.

전남광주통합특별시 해남교육지원청은 제47회 전국학생과학발명품경진대회에서 황산초 5학년 이하윤 학생이 ‘끊어져도 안심! 이중 끈 마스크’로 우수상을, 정유경 학생이 ‘잡고, 읽고, 뽑고 사용자 중심의 점자 손잡이 카드’로 장려상을 받았다고 29일 밝혔다.

두 학생은 생활 속 불편함에서 문제를 찾고 해결 방법을 작품으로 구체화했다. 지도교사인 문지연 교사는 학생들이 질문과 실험을 거쳐 아이디어를 발전시키도록 도왔다고 교육지원청은 설명했다.

황산초는 면 지역에 있는 전교생 26명의 작은학교다. 교육지원청은 학생 한 명 한 명의 생각을 살피고 교사와 학생이 긴밀하게 소통한 점을 이번 성과의 바탕으로 꼽았다.

조연주 해남교육장은 황산초를 방문해 수상 학생과 지도교사를 격려했다. 조 교육장은 “학교의 규모가 학생의 가능성을 결정하지 않는다”며 “학생들의 호기심과 도전을 응원한 선생님, 자신의 생각을 포기하지 않고 탐구한 학생들의 노력이 함께 만든 성과”라고 말했다.

이어 “해남의 작은학교가 학생 개개인의 특성과 재능을 발견하고 키울 수 있도록 학교별 특색 있는 교육과정과 맞춤형 교육활동을 지원하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

Two students from Hwangsan Elementary School in Haenam, which has just 26 students, have won awards at the 47th National Student Science Invention Contest.
The Haenam Office of Education announced on September 29 that fifth grader Lee Ha-yoon won an Excellence Award for “No Worries If It Breaks! A Double-Strap Mask.” Jeong Yu-gyeong received an Encouragement Award for “Grip, Read and Pull: A User-Centered Braille Handle Card.”
The students developed their inventions by identifying inconveniences in everyday life and working out ways to address them. Their teacher, Moon Ji-yeon, helped them refine their ideas through questions and repeated experiments, the education office said.
Hwangsan Elementary is a small school in a rural township. The education office credited close communication between teachers and students, along with attention to each student’s ideas, as factors behind the awards.
Haenam Superintendent of Education Cho Yeon-ju visited the school to congratulate the students and their teacher. “A school’s size does not determine a student’s potential,” Cho said. “This achievement reflects the efforts of a teacher who supported the students’ curiosity and challenges, and of students who continued exploring their ideas without giving up.”
Cho added that the education office would support distinctive school curricula and activities tailored to individual students to help small schools in Haenam discover and develop each student’s talents.
