교통 사망사고가 발생한 도로에서 운전자 시야를 가리던 감나무를 제거하는 데 적극 협조한 주민이 경찰로부터 감사장을 받았다. 해남경찰서(서장 박미영)는 지난 19일 교통사고 위험요인 개선에 적극 협조한 주민 정00씨에게 감사장을 수여했다고 밝혔다.

이번 감사장 수여는 지난 8월 11일 해남군 계곡면 만년동길에서 발생한 교통 사망사고 이후 경찰이 현장점검을 실시하는 과정에서 사고 위험요인 개선에 주민이 자발적으로 협조한 데 따른 것이다.

경찰에 따르면 당시 잠두리에서 둔주포 방면으로 진행하던 1톤 화물차와 도로 우측 농로에서 잠두리 방면으로 좌회전하던 보행보조용 의자차가 충돌했다. 이 사고로 보행보조용 의자차 운전자가 숨졌다.

해남경찰서는 사고 발생 이후 동일 유형의 사고가 재발하지 않도록 유관기관과 함께 현장점검을 벌였다. 점검 결과 사고지점 인근에 있던 감나무가 농로에서 도로로 진입하는 차량과 도로를 주행하는 차량 운전자의 시야 확보를 어렵게 하는 요인 가운데 하나로 확인됐다.

특히 해당 감나무는 개인 소유여서 교통환경 개선을 위해서는 소유주의 협조가 필요한 상황이었다. 감나무 소유자인 정00씨는 경찰의 교통사고 예방 취지에 공감하고 감나무 제거에 자발적으로 협조했다. 이에 따라 농로와 도로 사이의 시야가 이전보다 확보되면서 사고지점의 교통 위험요인도 일부 개선됐다. 해남경찰서는 사유재산임에도 지역 주민의 안전과 교통사고 예방을 위해 적극 협조한 점을 높이 평가해 정씨에게 감사장을 전달했다.

박미영 해남경찰서장은 “지역의 교통안전을 위해 흔쾌히 협조해 주신 데 깊이 감사드린다.”며 “앞으로도 교통사고 현장을 면밀하게 점검하고 위험요인을 즉시 개선해 안전한 교통환경을 만들어 나가겠다.”고 말했다.

이번 사고를 계기로 농촌지역 도로와 농로가 만나는 교차지점에서 수목이나 농작물, 시설물 등이 운전자의 시야를 가리는 위험요인은 없는지 지속적인 점검도 필요해 보인다.

특히 고령 운전자가 많이 이용하는 농기계와 보행보조용 이동수단의 통행이 잦은 지역은 사고 발생 이후의 조치뿐 아니라 평상시 시야 확보와 안전시설 점검 등 선제적인 교통환경 개선이 중요하다.

A resident who actively cooperated in removing a persimmon tree that obstructed drivers’ visibility near the site of a fatal traffic accident has received a certificate of appreciation from police.
The Haenam Police Station, headed by Chief Park Mi-young, said it presented a certificate of appreciation on August 19 to a resident identified as Jeong for actively cooperating in efforts to improve a traffic hazard.
The recognition followed a fatal traffic accident that occurred on August 11 along Mannyeondong-gil in Gyegok-myeon, Haenam County. During a subsequent site inspection, the resident voluntarily assisted police in eliminating a potential road safety hazard.
According to police, a 1-ton truck traveling from Jamdu-ri toward Dunjupo collided with a mobility chair that was making a left turn from a farm road on the right side of the roadway toward Jamdu-ri.
The person operating the mobility chair died in the accident.
Following the crash, Haenam Police conducted a joint inspection with relevant agencies to prevent similar accidents from recurring.
The inspection found that a persimmon tree near the accident site was one of the factors obstructing visibility for both vehicles entering the road from the farm road and motorists traveling along the main roadway.
Because the tree was privately owned, the cooperation of the property owner was necessary to improve the traffic environment.
Jeong, the owner of the persimmon tree, agreed with the police’s efforts to prevent traffic accidents and voluntarily cooperated in having the tree removed.
As a result, visibility between the farm road and the main roadway was improved, helping reduce a potential traffic hazard at the accident site.
Haenam Police presented Jeong with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his cooperation in improving road safety despite the fact that the tree was private property.
Chief Park Mi-young said, “We deeply appreciate the resident’s willing cooperation for the sake of local traffic safety. We will continue to closely inspect traffic accident sites and promptly address risk factors to create a safer road environment.”
The accident also highlights the need for continued inspections of rural intersections where farm roads meet main roads, particularly to identify trees, crops, structures, or other objects that may obstruct drivers’ visibility.
In areas frequently used by elderly residents operating agricultural machinery or mobility devices, proactive measures such as maintaining clear sightlines and inspecting safety facilities are especially important—not only after an accident occurs, but as part of routine prevention efforts.
