전국 국악인들이 판소리와 전통무용, 기악, 고법 실력을 겨루는 ‘제35회 땅끝해남 전국국악경연대회’가 오는 8월 22일부터 23일까지 이틀간 해남문화예술회관 일원에서 열린다.

이번 대회는 해남군이 주최하고 사단법인 한국국악협회 해남군지부가 주관한다. 전통문화예술을 계승·발전시키고 역량 있는 신인 국악인을 발굴·육성하기 위해 마련됐다.

경연 종목은 판소리·무용·기악·고법 등 4개 분야다. 참가자의 실력과 연령 등에 따라 명인부·일반부·신인부·노인부·학생부 등 5개 부문으로 나눠 진행된다.

판소리 부문은 판소리 다섯바탕 가운데 참가자가 작품을 선택해 기량을 겨루며, 무용 부문은 전통무용과 한국무용을 중심으로 진행된다. 기악 부문에서는 산조 연주 실력을 평가하고, 고법 부문에서는 판소리 장단에 맞춰 북을 치는 기량을 심사한다.

예선과 본선은 해남문화예술회관 대공연장과 다목적실 등에서 종목별로 진행될 예정이다. 부문별 입상자 가운데 우수 참가자를 선발하는 종합결선을 통해 최종 수상자를 결정한다.

이번 대회의 최고상은 명인부 종합대상으로 대통령상과 상금 1천만 원이 수여된다. 대통령상이 수여되는 전국 국악경연대회가 제한적이라는 점에서 땅끝해남 전국국악경연대회는 국악인들의 주요 등용문 가운데 하나로 평가받고 있다.

학생부터 신인·일반·노인·명인에 이르기까지 다양한 세대가 참여한다는 점도 특징이다. 단순한 전문 국악인 경연을 넘어 어린 국악 인재를 발굴하고 생활국악의 저변을 확대하는 세대 통합형 전통예술 무대로 자리 잡고 있다.

참가 신청은 8월 20일까지다. 참가 희망자는 정해진 신청서와 관련 서류를 작성해 한국국악협회 해남군지부 접수 이메일인 5354900@naver.com으로 제출해야 한다.

다만 8월 18일 현재 전체 참가 신청자 수와 종목별·부문별 신청 현황은 공개되지 않았다.

해남군과 대회 주관기관이 공개한 자료에는 대회 일정과 장소, 경연 종목, 참가 분야, 접수 방법 등이 담겼지만 전체 신청 인원과 판소리·무용·기악·고법별 접수 인원, 명인부·일반부·신인부·노인부·학생부별 신청 규모는 확인되지 않는다.

참가 접수가 20일까지 진행되는 만큼 최종 참가 규모는 접수 마감 이후 확정될 것으로 보인다. 개인정보 보호를 위해 참가자의 이름과 주소 등 개인 정보를 공개하기 어렵더라도 전체 참가자 수와 종목·부문·지역별 통계는 공개할 필요가 있다는 지적이다.

특히 대통령상과 상금 1천만 원이 걸린 전국 규모의 경연대회인 만큼 대회의 공정성과 신뢰도를 높이기 위해서는 참가 현황과 심사위원 구성, 심사 기준, 경연 순서 결정 방식 등을 투명하게 안내해야 한다.

지난해와 비교한 참가자 증감 현황과 전국 시·도별 참가자 분포, 해남지역 참가자 수, 최연소·최고령 참가자 등도 대회의 전국성과 세대별 참여도를 판단할 수 있는 주요 자료다.

해남군과 한국국악협회 해남군지부는 접수가 마감되는 20일 이후 최종 참가 인원을 확정하고 종목별 경연 일정과 참가자 경연 순서를 안내할 것으로 예상된다.

지역 문화예술계 관계자는 “땅끝해남 전국국악경연대회는 대통령상이 수여되는 해남의 대표적인 전통예술 행사”라며 “전국 국악인들이 공정한 환경에서 기량을 펼칠 수 있도록 참가 현황과 심사 운영계획을 명확하게 공개해야 한다.”고 말했다.

제35회 땅끝해남 전국국악경연대회는 8월 22일 예선을 시작으로 23일 본선과 종합결선, 시상식 등의 일정으로 진행될 예정이다.

The 35th Ttangkkeut Haenam National Gugak Competition, where traditional Korean musicians from across the country will compete in pansori, traditional dance, instrumental music and gosu drumming, will be held for two days from August 22 to 23 at the Haenam Culture and Arts Center.
The competition is hosted by Haenam County and organized by the Haenam branch of the Korean Traditional Music Association. It aims to preserve and develop Korea’s traditional performing arts while discovering and fostering talented emerging gugak performers.
The competition features four categories: pansori, dance, instrumental music and gosu drumming. Contestants will compete in five divisions based on their experience, ability and age: Master, General, Novice, Senior and Student.
In the pansori category, contestants will select and perform a passage from one of the five surviving pansori epics. The dance category will focus on traditional and Korean dance, while instrumental contestants will be judged on their performance of sanjo, a traditional solo instrumental genre. The gosu category will assess contestants’ skill in playing the barrel drum accompaniment for pansori.
Preliminary and final rounds are expected to take place by category in the main theater, multipurpose room and other venues within the Haenam Culture and Arts Center. The final winners will be selected through an overall championship round featuring outstanding prizewinners from each division.
The competition’s highest honor is the overall grand prize in the Master Division. The winner will receive the Presidential Award and KRW 10 million in prize money.
Since only a limited number of national gugak competitions are authorized to confer the Presidential Award, the Ttangkkeut Haenam National Gugak Competition is regarded as one of the major gateways for traditional Korean performers seeking national recognition.
Another distinctive feature is the participation of multiple generations, ranging from students and newcomers to general, senior and master-level performers. The event has established itself not merely as a competition for professional musicians, but also as an intergenerational stage that discovers young talent and broadens public participation in traditional Korean music.
Applications will be accepted through August 20. Prospective contestants must complete the designated application form and submit it with the required documents by email to the Haenam branch of the Korean Traditional Music Association at 5354900@naver.com.
However, as of August 18, neither the total number of applicants nor a breakdown by category or division had been disclosed.
Materials released by Haenam County and the event organizer provide information on the schedule, venue, competition categories, divisions and application procedure. They do not, however, specify how many people have applied overall or how many have registered in pansori, dance, instrumental music and gosu drumming. Given that this is a national competition offering a Presidential Award and KRW 10 million in prize money, the organizers should also clearly disclose participation figures, the composition of the judging panel, judging standards and the method used to determine the performance order to strengthen the event’s fairness and credibility.
Other important data would include changes in the number of contestants compared with last year, the distribution of entrants by province and metropolitan city, the number of participants from Haenam, and the ages of the youngest and oldest contestants. Such information would help demonstrate the competition’s nationwide reach and level of intergenerational participation.
Haenam County and the Haenam branch of the Korean Traditional Music Association are expected to finalize the number of contestants after applications close on August 20 and announce the detailed schedule and performance order for each category.
“The Ttangkkeut Haenam National Gugak Competition is Haenam’s flagship traditional arts event and one of the competitions authorized to confer the Presidential Award,” a local arts and culture representative said. “To ensure that traditional musicians from across the country can demonstrate their abilities in a fair environment, the organizers must clearly disclose participation figures and the competition’s judging and operational plans.”
The 35th Ttangkkeut Haenam National Gugak Competition is scheduled to begin with preliminary rounds on August 22, followed by the finals, overall championship round and awards ceremony on August 23.
