해남 대흥사와 대흥사 경내 백화암이 폭염 속에서 생활하는 수용자들의 건강한 여름나기를 돕기 위해 해남교도소에 생수와 컵라면을 기부했다.

해남교도소는 7월 29일 대흥사로부터 혹서기 수용자 지원 물품으로 생수 1만 병을 전달받았다고 밝혔다. 이와 함께 대흥사 경내 백화암의 만성스님도 수용자들을 위해 컵라면 500개를 기증하며 나눔에 뜻을 보탰다.

이번 기부는 최근 폭염이 지속되는 가운데 수용자들의 온열질환을 예방하고 건강하고 안정적인 수용생활을 지원하기 위해 마련됐다.
이날 전달식에는 대흥사 법은스님을 비롯해 해남교도소 불교분과 교정위원인 박충배·박중오 씨 등이 참석했다. 참석자들은 수용자들의 건강과 안정적인 사회 복귀를 지원하기 위한 종교계와 교정위원들의 지속적인 협력 필요성에 뜻을 모았다.

대흥사는 해남교도소 수용자들의 안전한 여름나기를 돕기 위해 매년 생수를 기부하며 부처님의 자비와 지역사회 나눔을 실천하고 있다. 백화암 만성스님의 컵라면 기증도 수용자들에게 따뜻한 위로와 격려를 전하기 위해 마련됐다.

법은스님은 “무더위에 지친 수용자들이 건강한 수용생활을 보내는 데 작은 도움이라도 됐으면 좋겠다”며 “앞으로도 부처님의 자비와 나눔의 마음으로 지속적인 지원을 할 수 있도록 노력하겠다.”고 말했다.

김남진 해남교도소장은 “매년 혹서기마다 생수를 기부해 준 해남 대흥사와 컵라면을 기증해 준 백화암 만성스님께 깊이 감사드린다”며 “이번에 전달된 물품은 무더위에 지친 수용자들에게 많은 도움이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

이어 “앞으로도 수용자들이 건강하게 여름을 날 수 있도록 수용환경 개선과 건강관리에 최선을 다하겠다.”고 덧붙였다.

교정위원은 수용자 상담과 종교 교화, 생활지원, 가족관계 회복, 출소 이후의 안정적인 사회 복귀 등을 돕는 민간 자원봉사자다. 불교분과 교정위원들은 불교 교화 활동과 나눔을 통해 수용자들이 심리적 안정을 찾고 건전한 사회 구성원으로 복귀할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.

교정시설은 다수의 수용자가 제한된 공간에서 생활하는 특성상 폭염이 장기간 이어지면 탈수와 열탈진 등 온열질환 위험이 커질 수 있다. 특히 고령자와 만성질환자, 장기 복용약이 있는 수용자에 대해서는 더욱 세심한 건강관리가 요구된다.

이번 기부가 실질적인 폭염 피해 예방으로 이어지려면 충분한 식수 공급과 함께 실내 온도·환기 상태 점검, 취약 수용자 건강 관찰, 적절한 휴식 보장, 응급환자 발생 시 신속한 의료 대응체계도 빈틈없이 가동돼야 한다.

Daeheungsa Temple and Baekhwaam Hermitage, located within the temple grounds, have donated bottled water and cup noodles to Haenam Prison to help inmates stay healthy during the intense summer heat.
Haenam Prison announced that it received 10,000 bottles of water from Daeheungsa Temple on July 29 as part of its summer heat-relief support for inmates. Ven. Manseong of Baekhwaam Hermitage also contributed 500 cup noodles, adding to the charitable initiative.
The donations were arranged to help prevent heat-related illnesses and support inmates in maintaining healthy and stable lives as extreme temperatures continue.
The donation ceremony was attended by Ven. Beobeun of Daeheungsa Temple and Park Chung-bae and Park Jung-o, correctional volunteers serving in the prison’s Buddhist Division. Participants emphasized the need for continued cooperation between religious organizations and correctional volunteers to protect inmates’ health and support their successful reintegration into society.
Daeheungsa Temple donates bottled water to Haenam Prison every summer, putting Buddhist compassion into practice and contributing to the local community. Ven. Manseong’s donation of cup noodles was also intended to offer inmates comfort and encouragement.
“I hope this donation will provide even a small measure of assistance to inmates suffering in the sweltering heat and help them maintain healthy lives in custody,” Ven. Beobeun said. “We will continue striving to offer support in the spirit of the Buddha’s compassion and generosity.”
Kim Nam-jin, warden of Haenam Prison, said, “I extend my deepest gratitude to Daeheungsa Temple for donating bottled water every summer and to Ven. Manseong of Baekhwaam Hermitage for contributing cup noodles. These supplies will provide meaningful assistance to inmates struggling with the heat.”
He added, “Haenam Prison will continue doing its utmost to improve living conditions and manage inmates’ health so that they can safely get through the summer.”
Correctional volunteers are civilian volunteers who assist inmates through counseling, religious guidance, daily living support, family relationship restoration and preparation for a stable return to society after release. Members of the Buddhist Division provide religious guidance and charitable support to help inmates find emotional stability and return to society as responsible members of the community.
Because many inmates live together in confined spaces, prolonged extreme heat can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses. Elderly inmates, people with chronic illnesses and those taking long-term medication require especially careful health monitoring.
