해남 출신 남곡(南谷) 정동복 화백이 ‘2026 서울세계미술전람회 우수작가 초대전’에서 종합대상을 수상하며 반세기 넘게 이어온 작품활동과 독창적인 예술세계를 인정받았다.

종합대상은 단순히 한 작품의 입선이나 특선을 넘어 출품작에 담긴 예술성과 완성도, 작가가 오랜 기간 축적해 온 창작 성과를 종합적으로 평가한 상이라는 점에서 의미가 크다.

함께 받은 초대작가 인증서는 정 화백이 전람회 운영 주체가 인정하는 초대작가로 선정됐음을 공식적으로 증명하는 문서다. 앞으로 관련 초대전과 기획전 등에 참여할 수 있는 작가로서의 활동 경력을 공식적으로 인정받았다는 의미가 있다.

다만 초대작가에게 부여되는 구체적인 권한과 인증 유효기간, 향후 전시 참여 조건 등은 인증서를 발급한 주최 측의 운영규정에 따라 적용된다.
이번 초대전 수상작들은 오는 12월 31일까지 한류미술원 갤러리와 대한민국 국가미술원 갤러리, K스타저널 등을 통해 온라인 지상전 형태로 소개될 예정이다.

반세기 넘게 걸어온 한국화 외길
1948년 해남에서 태어난 남곡 정동복 화백은 1970년대 현당 김한영 화백에게 사사하며 화단에 입문했다. 이후 50여 년 동안 한국화 창작에 매진하며 산수화와 신선도, 기명절지도 분야에서 자신만의 독창적인 작품세계를 구축했다.

특히 정 화백은 동양철학과 전통회화의 정신을 바탕으로 신선들의 풍류와 삶의 여유, 자연과 인간의 조화를 화폭에 담아내며 ‘신선도 화가’로 널리 알려졌다.

정 화백은 지금까지 수십 차례의 개인전과 초대전을 열었다. 2024년에는 해남문화예술회관을 비롯해 목포와 광주, 서울 등지에서 작품을 선보였으며, 이후에도 꾸준히 전시와 창작활동을 이어가고 있다.
지난 2023년에는 한국화·신선도 분야 ‘대한민국 대한명인’에 선정됐으며, 2024년에는 월드마스터위원회가 선정하는 ‘세계명인’에 이름을 올렸다.

정 화백은 작품활동뿐 아니라 지역 미술문화 확산과 후진 양성에도 힘써왔다. 남곡예술원을 운영하며 지역 작가와 문하생들에게 작품 창작과 전시 기회를 제공하고, 회원전과 교류전을 통해 해남 미술의 저변을 넓혀왔다.

또한 한국미술협회 자문위원을 비롯해 각종 미술단체와 전시위원회에서 활동하며 중앙과 지역 미술계를 연결하는 역할도 수행하고 있다.

Namgok (南谷) Jeong Dong-bok, a renowned painter from Haenam, has won the Grand Prize at the “2026 Seoul World Art Exhibition Invitational Exhibition for Outstanding Artists,” receiving recognition for his distinctive artistic vision and more than five decades of creative work.
The awards ceremony was held on July 24 on the fifth floor of the Insa Art Plaza Gallery in Insa-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul.
The event was organized to introduce the creative and original works of Korean and international artists and to support the globalization of Korean art and the development of artists who can lead the Korean Wave in the fine arts.
Jeong received the Grand Prize commendation and an Invited Artist Certificate in recognition of the sculptural qualities, creativity and technical excellence of his work, as well as his extensive artistic career.
The Grand Prize is regarded as significant because it evaluates not only the merit of a single submitted work but also the artist’s overall creative accomplishments, artistic originality and the quality of the body of work developed over many years.
The Invited Artist Certificate officially confirms that Jeong has been selected as an invited artist recognized by the exhibition’s organizing body. It also serves as an official record of his professional standing and eligibility to participate in related invitational and special exhibitions.
However, the specific privileges, validity period and conditions for future exhibition participation associated with the certificate are governed by the regulations of the issuing organization.
The award-winning works from the exhibition are scheduled to be presented through online exhibitions operated by the Hallyu Art Institute Gallery, the Korea National Academy of Fine Arts Gallery and K-Star Journal until December 31, 2026.
More Than Half a Century Devoted to Korean Painting
Born in Haenam in 1948, Namgok Jeong Dong-bok entered the art world in the 1970s after studying under Hyeondang Kim Han-young. For more than 50 years, he has devoted himself to Korean painting, establishing a distinctive artistic identity in landscapes, paintings of immortals and gimyeong-jeolji—traditional still-life paintings featuring symbolic vessels, flowers, plants and other auspicious objects.
Drawing upon Eastern philosophy and the spirit of traditional painting, Jeong portrays the elegance and leisurely lives of immortals, as well as the harmony between humanity and nature. His work has earned him widespread recognition as a leading painter of immortal figures.
Jeong has held dozens of solo and invitational exhibitions. In 2024, he presented his works at the Haenam Culture and Arts Center and at exhibitions in Mokpo, Gwangju and Seoul. He continues to pursue an active career in both exhibition and creative work.
In 2023, he was designated a “Korean Master” in the field of Korean painting and paintings of immortals. In 2024, he was also named a “World Master” by the World Master Committee.
In addition to his own artistic practice, Jeong has contributed to the expansion of the local arts community and the training of younger artists. Through the Namgok Art Institute, he has provided local artists and students with opportunities to create and exhibit their work, while broadening the foundation of the arts in Haenam through group and exchange exhibitions.
He has also served as an adviser to the Korean Fine Arts Association and participated in various arts organizations and exhibition committees, helping connect the regional art community with the wider national art scene.
His latest achievement carries significance beyond an individual award. It has once again brought national attention to traditional Korean painting created by an artist whose career began in Haenam.
While preserving the established techniques of traditional Korean painting, Namgok (南谷) Jeong Dong-bok has incorporated his own interpretations and expressive methods to carry paintings of immortals and gimyeong-jeolji into the modern era.
