인생에는 가끔 목적지보다 함께 가는 사람이 더 소중한 여행이 있다.
지난 6월 17일, 완도 금당도를 찾은 산행이 바로 그런 하루였다.
아직 도시가 잠에서 깨어나기 전인 오전 7시 30분. 해남군보건소 앞에서 친구들과 만났다. 학창 시절부터 함께 울고 웃으며 살아온 친구들이다. 어느덧 40여 년이라는 세월이 흘렀지만 얼굴을 마주하는 순간 우리는 다시 소년이 된다.

이번 산행에는 나를 포함해 모두 8명이 함께했다.
장흥 노력항으로 향하는 차 안에서는 옛이야기가 끊이지 않았다. 교복 입던 시절의 추억부터 살아오며 겪었던 희로애락까지 이야기는 끝이 없었다. 세월은 흘렀지만 친구들과 나누는 웃음은 예전 그대로였다.

오전 8시 39분 노력항에 도착했을 때 하늘은 잔뜩 흐려 있었다.
오전 9시 48분, 촉촉한 비가 내리기 시작했다. 비에 젖은 바다는 잔잔했고 섬들은 안개 속에 숨어 있었다. 비는 여행자에게 불편함을 주지만 자연은 오히려 더 깊은 색깔을 드러낸다.

오전 10시 30분 여객선이 노력항을 떠나 금당도로 향했다.
오전 11시 금당도 가학항에 도착했을 때 빗줄기는 더욱 굵어졌다. 그러나 누구 하나 아쉬워하지 않았다.
오히려 "비 오는 날 금당도가 더 아름답다"며 서로를 격려했다.
금당도의 상징인 가마바위는 비에 젖어 더욱 웅장했다.

수천만 년 동안 바람과 파도를 견디며 서 있는 바위는 마치 인생의 무게를 묵묵히 견뎌온 우리의 모습 같았다. 바위 앞에 서니 세월이란 것이 인간에게만 흐르는 것이 아니라 자연에도 새겨진다는 생각이 들었다.

이어 찾은 교암청풍은 왜 금당팔경 가운데 으뜸으로 꼽히는지 알 수 있게 했다.
안개와 비가 어우러진 바다 풍경은 한 폭의 수묵화 같았다. 친구들은 잠시 말을 멈추고 풍경을 바라보았다. 나이가 들수록 깨닫게 되는 것이 있다. 아름다운 풍경은 많지만 그것을 함께 바라볼 사람이 있다는 것은 더 큰 행복이라는 사실이다.

세포마을에서는 섬사람들의 소박한 삶의 흔적을 만날 수 있었다.
돌담길과 작은 어선들, 조용한 골목길은 화려하지 않았지만 정겨웠다. 사람 냄새가 나는 풍경은 언제나 마음을 편안하게 한다.
산행을 마친 뒤 오후 2시 8분 가학항을 떠났다.

하지만 이날의 진짜 이야기는 그때부터 시작되었다.
강진 마량항에 도착한 우리는 수협공판장에서 싱싱한 횟감을 준비해 서운이네 집으로 향했다.
둥그렇게 둘러앉아 회 한 점에 술 한 잔을 곁들이며 우리는 다시 젊은 날로 돌아갔다. 누군가는 친구의 흰머리를 놀렸고, 누군가는 건강을 걱정했다. 웃음과 농담이 이어지는 사이 시간은 어느새 흘러갔다.
그날 우리가 먹은 것은 단순한 음식이 아니었다.

40여 년 동안 쌓여온 우정을 먹고 마셨다.
세월의 무게를 견디며 살아온 이야기, 서로를 향한 믿음과 응원, 그리고 아직도 변하지 않은 정이 술잔마다 가득 담겨 있었다.

오후 4시 55분 해남으로 향하는 길.
차 안은 잠시 조용했다. 모두가 하루의 여운에 젖어 있었기 때문이다.

비 내리는 금당도의 풍경도 아름다웠지만 그날 가장 아름다웠던 것은 자연이 아니라 사람이었다.
40여 년 동안 인생이라는 긴 산길을 함께 걸어온 친구들.

우리는 금당도의 산과 바다를 보기 위해 길을 떠났지만 결국 다시 확인한 것은 우정의 가치였다.
세월은 누구에게나 공평하게 흐른다. 머리는 희어지고 얼굴에는 주름이 늘어난다. 그러나 진정한 친구와의 우정은 세월이 흐를수록 더욱 깊고 진하게 익어간다.

비에 젖은 금당도의 풍경은 언젠가 기억 속에서 희미해질지 모른다.
하지만 함께 웃고 함께 걸었던 친구들의 모습만은 오래도록 가슴속에 남아 있을 것이다.

그래서 이날의 금당도는 단순한 산행지가 아니었다.
인생의 소중한 인연을 다시 확인하게 해준 아름다운 섬이었다.

Sometimes in life, the people who travel with us are more important than the destination itself.
That was exactly the kind of day we experienced on June 17 during a hiking trip to Geumdangdo Island in Wando.
At 7:30 a.m., before the city had fully awakened, we gathered in front of the Haenam Public Health Center. These were friends with whom I had shared laughter and tears since our school days. More than forty years had passed, yet whenever we met, we became boys again.
There were eight of us on this journey.
As we traveled toward Jangheung’s Noryeok Port, stories from the past flowed endlessly. Memories of school days, the joys and sorrows of life, and countless shared experiences filled the vehicle with laughter. Time had passed, but the joy we found in each other’s company remained unchanged.
When we arrived at Noryeok Port at 8:39 a.m., the sky was heavily overcast.
By 9:48 a.m., a gentle rain had begun to fall. The rain-soaked sea lay calm before us, while distant islands disappeared into the mist. Rain may inconvenience travelers, but it often reveals nature’s deeper beauty.
At 10:30 a.m., our ferry departed Noryeok Port for Geumdangdo.
When we arrived at Gahak Port at 11:00 a.m., the rain had become heavier. Yet no one seemed disappointed. Instead, we encouraged one another, saying, “Geumdangdo is even more beautiful in the rain.”
Gama Rock, the island’s iconic landmark, appeared even more magnificent beneath the falling rain.
Standing before the massive rock, shaped by millions of years of wind and waves, I was reminded of the burdens and endurance of human life. It seemed that time leaves its marks not only on people but also on nature itself.
Our next destination was Gyoam Cheongpung, one of the most celebrated views among Geumdangdo’s Eight Scenic Wonders.
The mist, rain, and sea blended together into a landscape resembling a traditional ink painting. For a moment, we stood in silence, gazing at the scenery. As we grow older, we come to realize that having someone with whom to share a beautiful view is an even greater blessing than the view itself.
In Sepo Village, we encountered the simple traces of island life.
Stone walls, small fishing boats, and quiet alleyways created a scene that was not glamorous, but warm and comforting. Places filled with the scent of ordinary life have a unique way of bringing peace to the heart.
After completing our hike, we departed Gahak Port at 2:08 p.m.
But in many ways, the real story of the day was only beginning.
Upon arriving at Maryang Port in Gangjin, we purchased fresh sashimi from the fisheries auction market and headed to Seoun’s home.
Gathered around a table, sharing slices of fresh fish and glasses of drinks, we found ourselves transported back to our youth. One friend joked about another’s gray hair, while someone else spoke of health concerns. Laughter and friendly teasing filled the room as the hours slipped by unnoticed.
What we shared that day was far more than food and drink.
We were sharing forty years of friendship.
The stories of lives lived, hardships endured, trust earned, and unwavering companionship filled every glass we raised together.
At 4:55 p.m., we began our journey back to Haenam.
The vehicle grew quiet. Each of us was absorbed in the lingering emotions of the day.
At 5:44 p.m., we arrived in Haenam.
The rain-soaked landscapes of Geumdangdo were beautiful, but the most beautiful part of the day was not nature—it was the people.
These were friends who had walked alongside one another on life’s long mountain trail for more than forty years.
We had set out to see the mountains and seas of Geumdangdo, but what we truly rediscovered was the value of friendship.
Time treats everyone equally. Hair turns gray, and wrinkles deepen with age. Yet genuine friendship grows richer and stronger as the years pass.
The rain-drenched scenery of Geumdangdo may one day fade from memory.
But the images of friends laughing, walking, and sharing life together will remain in our hearts for years to come.
That is why Geumdangdo was not merely a hiking destination that day.
It was a beautiful island that reminded us of the priceless value of the relationships that accompany us throughout life.
