전남의 대표 산림자원인 ‘황칠’이 단순 원료를 넘어 고부가가치 산업으로 재탄생한다.
전라남도산림연구원과 휴온스엔이 손을 잡으며, 지역 자원을 글로벌 시장으로 연결하는 ‘산림 바이오 산업 전환’이 본격화됐다.
전라남도산림연구원은 30일 건강기능식품 전문기업 휴온스엔과 업무협약을 체결하고, 황칠나무(Dendropanax trifidus)를 중심으로 한 건강기능식품 개발과 산업화에 본격 착수했다고 밝혔다.
■ “전국 90% 생산… 해남 중심 황칠, 산업화 골든타임”
전남은 해남·완도 등을 중심으로 전국 황칠 재배면적의 90% 이상인 약 4,600ha를 차지하는 최대 주산지다.
특히 해남 황칠은 2023년 산림청 지리적표시(제61호)로 등록되며 품질과 지역성을 공식 인정받은 자원이다.
그러나 현재 황칠은 식품의약품안전처 기준상 ‘제한적 식품 원료’에 머물러 있어, 산업 확장과 소비 시장 확대에 구조적 한계를 안고 있었다.
이번 협약은 이 ‘규제 장벽’을 넘어 산업화로 직행하기 위한 전략적 결단이라는 점에서 의미가 크다.
■ “제2의 인삼 노린다.”… 기능성·브랜드화 동시 추진
휴온스엔은 황칠 속명 ‘Dendropanax’가 인삼 속명 ‘Panax’와 같은 어원을 가진 점에 주목해, 황칠을 ‘제2의 인삼’으로 육성하는 전략을 본격화한다.
이미 황칠 추출물을 활용한 인지기능 개선 소재 개발과 제품 ‘인지코어’ 출시 등 초기 성과를 확보한 상태다.
향후에는 기존 기능성에 추가 효능을 결합한 복합 기능성 원료로 확장해 글로벌 건강기능식품 시장 선점에 나선다.
■ “원료→제품→시장”… 전주기 산업화 착수
양 기관은 이번 협약을 통해
▲황칠나무 안전성 데이터 확보
▲식약처 일반식품 원료 등재 추진
▲기능성 소재 발굴 및 효능 검증
▲건강기능식품 제품화 및 산업화 등 전주기 산업 체계를 구축하기로 했다.
특히 산림청 R&D 사업인 ‘산림분야 그린바이오 미래형 가치사슬 기술개발’을 통해 향후 5년간 총 30억 원의 국비를 투입, 기능성 검증부터 제품화까지 단계별 산업화를 추진할 계획이다.
■ “자원이 소득이 되는 구조”… 지역경제 파급 기대
이번 프로젝트의 핵심은 단순 연구개발이 아니라 ‘임업인 소득 구조 혁신’이다.
그동안 원료 생산에 머물렀던 황칠 산업을 제품·브랜드·수출까지 연결해, 지역 경제에 직접적인 수익을 환원하겠다는 전략이다.
오득실 전남산림연구원장은 “황칠은 전남을 대표하는 자원이지만, 아직 지역 소득으로 충분히 연결되지 못했다”며 “이번 협약을 계기로 기능성 검증부터 글로벌 시장 진출까지 전주기 산업화를 성공시켜 황칠을 전남의 핵심 소득자원으로 육성하겠다.”고 밝혔다.
해남이 가진 ‘자원’이 이제 ‘산업’으로 바뀐다.
황칠을 둘러싼 이번 도전은 단순한 제품 개발이 아니다.
지역의 숲에서 시작된 가능성이, 세계 시장으로 확장되는 ‘산림경제 대전환’의 신호탄이다.

Simultaneous push for functional food development and global expansion… “Transforming forestry into a high-value income engine”

‘Hwangchil,’ a signature forest resource of Jeollanam-do, is being reborn from a raw material into a high value-added industry.
With the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute joining hands with Huons N, a full-scale transition toward a forest bio-industry that connects local resources to global markets is now underway.
The Jeonnam Forest Research Institute announced on the 30th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Huons N, a specialized health functional food company, to begin full-scale development and industrialization of health functional products based on the hwangchil tree (Dendropanax trifidus).
■ “90% of national production… Haenam-centered hwangchil enters its golden era”
Jeollanam-do, centered around Haenam and Wando, accounts for more than 90% of the nation’s hwangchil cultivation area, totaling approximately 4,600 hectares.
In particular, Haenam hwangchil was registered as a geographical indication (No. 61, Korea Forest Service, May 30, 2023), officially recognizing its quality and regional identity.
However, hwangchil is currently classified as a “restricted food ingredient” by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, limiting its industrial expansion and market accessibility.
This agreement is seen as a strategic breakthrough to overcome regulatory barriers and accelerate industrialization.
■ “Targeting ‘the second ginseng’”… advancing functionality and branding
Huons N has focused on the fact that the genus name Dendropanax shares the same Greek root meaning “healing” as Panax (ginseng).
Based on this, the company aims to elevate hwangchil into a flagship product comparable to ginseng.
It has already achieved initial results, including the development of cognitive function-improving materials using hwangchil extracts and the launch of the product “InjiCore.”
Going forward, the company plans to expand into next-generation multifunctional ingredients by combining additional health benefits, aiming to preempt the global functional food market.
■ “From raw material to market”… full-cycle industrialization begins
Through this agreement, the two institutions will jointly pursue:
▲ Securing safety data for hwangchil
▲ Promotion of its registration as a general food ingredient by regulatory authorities
▲ Discovery and validation of functional bio-materials
▲ Product development and industrialization of health functional foods
In particular, through the Korea Forest Service R&D program, “Green Bio Future Value Chain Technology Development in Forestry,” a total of KRW 3 billion (approx. USD equivalent) will be invested over five years to promote step-by-step industrialization from functionality verification to commercialization.
■ “Turning resources into income”… expected regional economic impact
The core of this project lies not merely in R&D, but in restructuring income for forestry workers.
By connecting raw material production to product development, branding, and exports, the initiative aims to return tangible profits to the local economy.
Oh Deuk-sil, Director of the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute, stated:
“Hwangchil is a representative resource of Jeonnam, yet it has not sufficiently translated into local income. Through this agreement, we will successfully achieve full-cycle industrialization—from functionality verification to global market entry—and foster hwangchil as a key high-value income resource for the region.”
What Haenam has long held as a “resource” is now transforming into an “industry.”
This initiative surrounding hwangchil is not merely about product development.
It marks the beginning of a paradigm shift—where potential rooted in local forests expands into the global market, signaling a new era of forest-based economic transformation.
