전남도는 1986년부터 독립기념관에 보관돼온 고광순 의병장의 ‘불원복(不遠復) 태극기’가 소장자의 뜻에 따라 25일 남도의병역사박물관에 기탁됐다고 밝혔다.
이번 기탁은 전남도가 소장자와 꾸준히 소통하며 박물관 건립 취지를 설명하고 설득한 끝에 이뤄진 결실이다.
제107주년 3·1절과 3월 5일 남도의병역사박물관 개관을 앞두고 가장 상징적인 의병 문화유산이 고향으로 돌아왔다는 점에서 의미가 각별하다.
2008년 국가등록문화유산으로 지정된 ‘불원복 태극기’는 고광순 의병장이 지리산 일대에서 항일 무장투쟁을 전개하며 직접 제작해 사용한 태극기다.
태극 문양 위에 붉은 글씨로 새겨진 ‘不遠復’은 “머지않아 국권을 회복한다.”는 결연한 의지를 담고 있다.
1907년 연곡사에서 일본군과 혈전을 벌이다 순국한 고광순 의병장은 대한제국기 대표적 항일 영웅으로, 임진왜란 당시 활약한 의병장 고경명의 후손이다.
전남도는 불원복 태극기를 박물관 상설전시실의 핵심 유물로 배치하고, 이를 활용한 뮤지엄 굿즈와 교육 콘텐츠를 개발해 도민이 일상 속에서 의병 정신을 체감하도록 할 방침이다.
박중환 남도의병역사박물관 개관준비단장은 “불원복 태극기의 귀향은 도민에게 의향 남도의 긍지를 다시 일깨우는 역사적 사건”이라며 “박물관이 의병 정신을 계승하는 ‘의(義) 교육 허브’로 자리매김하도록 적극 활용하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

“The Righteous Army’s Flag Returns Ahead of March 1st”
Jeollanam-do has reclaimed a powerful symbol of its identity as the “Land of Righteousness” after 40 years.
The province announced that the “Bulwonbok (不遠復) Taegeukgi” — the flag used by Righteous Army commander Go Gwang-sun — which had been preserved at the Independence Hall of Korea since 1986, was officially donated on the 25th to the Jeonnam Righteous Army History Museum in accordance with the wishes of its owner.
This donation marks the meaningful result of Jeollanam-do’s sustained communication with the owner, during which the province explained the vision and purpose behind the museum’s establishment. The return of this most symbolic artifact of the Righteous Army is especially significant as it comes ahead of the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and the museum’s official opening on March 5.
Designated as a Registered Cultural Heritage of Korea in 2008, the “Bulwonbok Taegeukgi” was personally made and used by Go Gwang-sun during his armed resistance against Japanese forces in the Jirisan region. Inscribed in red above the Taegeuk emblem are the characters “不遠復,” meaning “National sovereignty shall soon be restored,” reflecting an unwavering determination to reclaim the nation.
Go Gwang-sun, who was killed in 1907 during a fierce battle against Japanese troops at Yeongoksa Temple, is remembered as one of the most prominent Righteous Army leaders of the Korean Empire period. He was also a descendant of Go Gyeong-myeong, a renowned Righteous Army commander during the Imjin War.
Jeollanam-do plans to designate the Bulwonbok Taegeukgi as a key artifact in the museum’s permanent exhibition hall. The province will also develop museum goods and educational programs based on the flag, enabling residents to encounter and remember the spirit of the Righteous Army in their daily lives.
Park Jung-hwan, Director of the Museum Opening Preparatory Team, stated, “The homecoming of the Bulwonbok Taegeukgi is a historic moment that rekindles pride in Jeonnam as the Land of Righteousness. We will actively utilize it as an educational resource so that the museum can serve as a hub for passing down the spirit of righteousness to future generations.”
