완도소방서(서장 이민석)가 겨울철 난방기기 사용 증가로 전기 사용량이 급증하는 시기를 맞아 전기화재 예방을 위한 집중 홍보에 나섰다.
완도소방서에 따르면 최근 5년간 완도군에서 발생한 전기화재는 총 146건, 이로 인한 재산피해는 28억7,966만 원에 달하는 것으로 집계됐다.
해마다 반복되는 전기화재의 상당수는 생활 속 작은 부주의에서 시작되는 만큼, 기본적인 안전수칙 준수가 무엇보다 중요하다는 설명이다.
전기화재는 주로 멀티탭 과부하, 문어발식 콘센트 사용, 노후 전선·플러그 접촉 불량, 전열기구 주변 가연물 방치 등으로 발생한다.
특히 전기장판, 온풍기, 전기히터 등 전열기구 사용이 집중되는 겨울철에는 과열과 합선 위험이 크게 높아져 각별한 주의가 필요하다.
완도소방서가 안내한 주요 전기화재 예방수칙은 다음과 같다.
▲ 고용량 전열기구의 멀티탭 동시 사용 금지
▲ 문어발식 콘센트 사용 자제
▲ 전선·플러그의 변색·탄 흔적 등 이상 여부 수시 점검
▲ 전열기구 주변 1m 이내 이불·종이·커튼 등 가연물 제거
▲ 외출·취침 전 전열기구 전원 차단
▲ 차단기(분전반) 이상 징후 확인
▲ 주택용 소화기 비치
이민석 완도소방서장은 “전기화재는 기본 수칙만 지켜도 상당 부분 예방할 수 있는 대표적인 부주의 화재”라며 “멀티탭 과부하를 줄이고 전열기구 주변을 정리하는 작은 실천이 가족의 생명과 재산을 지키는 가장 확실한 방법”이라고 강조했다.
완도소방서는 앞으로도 군민 생활과 밀접한 화재 예방 홍보를 지속적으로 추진해, 겨울철 화재 없는 안전한 완도 만들기에 총력을 기울일 방침이다.

Wando Fire Station Issues ‘Carelessness Warning’ on Winter Electrical Fires… 146 Cases and KRW 2.8 Billion in Damage Over Five Years
Wando Fire Station (Chief Lee Min-seok) has launched an intensive public awareness campaign to prevent electrical fires as electricity usage surges during the winter heating season.
According to the Wando Fire Station, a total of 146 electrical fires occurred in Wando County over the past five years, resulting in property damage totaling KRW 2.87966 billion. The station emphasized that many electrical fires recur each year and often begin with small lapses in everyday caution, making strict adherence to basic safety rules critically important.
Electrical fires are commonly caused by overloaded power strips, daisy-chained outlets, aged wiring or loose plug connections, and combustible materials placed near heating appliances. In particular, during winter—when electric heating pads, fan heaters, and electric space heaters are used extensively—the risk of overheating and short circuits increases significantly, requiring extra vigilance.
The Wando Fire Station highlighted the following key safety guidelines to prevent electrical fires:
Do not use multiple high-wattage heating appliances simultaneously on a single power strip
Avoid using daisy-chained outlets
Regularly check wires and plugs for discoloration or burn marks
Keep combustible items such as bedding, paper, and curtains at least 1 meter away from heating appliances
Turn off heating appliances before going out or sleeping
Check circuit breakers (distribution panels) for any signs of malfunction
Keep a household fire extinguisher readily available
Chief Lee Min-seok stated, “Electrical fires are a typical example of fires caused by carelessness, and a large proportion can be prevented simply by following basic safety rules. Small actions—such as reducing power strip overloads and keeping areas around heating appliances clear—are the most reliable way to protect your family’s lives and property.”
The Wando Fire Station plans to continue promoting fire prevention measures closely tied to residents’ daily lives, dedicating all efforts to creating a safe, fire-free Wando throughout the winter season.
