엿타령을 4대째 이어오고 있는 조오환·조유아 부녀가 최근 진도 특산품 울금엿을 소재로 한 트로트 신곡 ‘사랑엿’을 공개했다.

이번 발표는 전통음악과 대중음악의 결합을 통해 지역 문화 홍보와 특산품 소비 촉진 효과가 기대되고 있다.

조오환 선생은 전라남도무형문화재 ‘조도닻배노래’ 예능보유자이며, 진도엿타령보존회 회장으로 활동 중이다.

엿타령은 조오환 선생의 조부 조해정, 모친 박색구, 딸 조유아로 이어지는 4대 향토문화 전승 기록을 가지고 있다.

딸 조유아 씨는 국립창극단 단원으로 서울과 지역을 오가며 국악 활동을 이어가고 있다.

조오환 명인은 “엿타령의 장터 문화와 흥을 현대 대중음악과 접목해 젊은 세대와 소통하고자 했다”며 제작 배경을 설명했다.

또한 “울금엿은 진도의 대표 특산품으로, 곡을 통해 지역의 정서와 향토성을 함께 전달하고 싶었다.”고 말했다.

신곡 ‘사랑엿’은 울금엿의 맛과 전통 장터의 분위기를 직설적이고 반복적인 후렴으로 표현한 것이 특징이다.

또한 중간 아니리(대사)에는 “탐욕을 부리지 말고 천천히 살라”는 내용이 포함돼 엿타령 전통의 담백한 삶의 철학을 유지했다.

— Promoting Jindo’s Turmeric Yeot and Local Cultural Heritage —**
Fourth-generation Yeot-taryeong (traditional “taffy song”) masters Cho Oh-hwan and Cho Yu-ah have released a new trot song titled “Love Yeot,” inspired by Jindo’s well-known turmeric yeot (taffy).
The release is expected to contribute to regional cultural promotion and boost consumption of the local specialty by combining traditional folk elements with contemporary trot music.
Cho Oh-hwan is a recognized holder of Jeollanam-do Intangible Cultural Property “Jodo Ddatbae Songs” and currently serves as chairman of the Jindo Yeot-taryeong Preservation Association.
The Yeot-taryeong tradition has been passed down through four generations in his family—from his grandfather Cho Hae-jeong and mother Park Saek-gu, to his daughter Cho Yu-ah.
Cho Yu-ah, a member of the Korean National Changgeuk Company, actively performs traditional music in both Seoul and the Jindo region.

“Yeot-taryeong has its roots in the lively culture of traditional markets,” Cho said, explaining the background of the project.
“We wanted to connect with younger generations by blending that traditional energy with modern trot music. Turmeric yeot is one of Jindo’s signature products, and we aimed to convey our region’s sentiment and local identity through the song.”
