“동절기 해양오염, 한 척도 놓치지 않는다”
완도해경, 취약선박 집중 실태조사 착수

완도해양경찰서(서장 김길규)가 기상 악화로 해양오염사고 위험이 급증하는 동절기를 앞두고, 오는 12월 12일까지 ‘2025년 하반기 해양오염 취약선박 실태조사’에 본격 돌입했다.

이번 조사는 6개월 이상 운항하지 않은 유조선과 20톤 이상 일반 선박 등 외관상 오염사고 위험이 높은 ‘취약선박’을 대상으로 실시된다. 완도해경은 현장 점검을 통해 ▲선체 손상 여부 및 침수 가능성, 선박 내 적재된 오염물질의 잔존량 및 변동 상황, 선박 소유자의 관리 이행 여부 등을 중점 확인할 계획이다.

해경은 점검 결과 위험도가 높다고 판단되는 선박에 대해서는 관계기관과 정보를 공유하고, 해상 순찰 강화·오염물질 사전 제거·에어벤트(배출구) 봉쇄 등 선제적 조치를 즉시 시행해 사고 가능성을 차단한다는 방침이다.

완도해경 관계자는 “동절기는 작은 사고도 대형 오염으로 이어질 수 있는 고위험 시기”라며 “취약선박에 대한 점검·관리를 한층 강화해 위험요소를 조기에 제거하고, 더욱 안전한 해양환경 조성에 최선을 다 하겠다.”고 말했다.

Wando Coast Guard Launches Intensive Inspection of High-Risk Vessels
The Wando Coast Guard (Chief Kim Gil-gyu) has begun the “2025 Second-Half Inspection of Marine Pollution–Vulnerable Vessels,” an intensive operation running through December 12, aimed at preventing marine pollution accidents during the winter season when severe weather significantly increases risks.
The inspection targets “vulnerable vessels,” including oil tankers and general vessels over 20 tons that have remained inactive for more than six months or show clear external signs of potential pollution hazards. The Coast Guard will focus on on-site checks of ▲ hull damage and the possibility of flooding, ▲ remaining quantities and changes in onboard pollutants, and ▲ whether vessel owners are properly managing their ships.
If a vessel is deemed high-risk, the Coast Guard plans to take immediate preventive actions, such as sharing information with relevant agencies, strengthening maritime patrols, removing onboard pollutants in advance, and sealing air vents to block potential leaks.
A Wando Coast Guard official stated,
“Winter is a season in which even minor incidents can escalate into major pollution events. We will reinforce inspections and management of vulnerable vessels, eliminate risk factors early, and do our utmost to ensure a safer marine environment.”
