| “배움에는 나이가 없다”… 진도군, 제11회 군민한글학교 백일장 성황

진도군이 마련한 ‘제11회 군민한글학교 백일장’이 지난 11일(화), 진도군청 대회의실에서 따뜻한 감동 속에 열렸다.
이번 행사는 한글을 새롭게 배운 어르신들이 그동안 갈고닦은 글 솜씨를 마음껏 펼치며 배움의 기쁨과 인생의 이야기를 나누는 자리였다.
이날 백일장에는 군민한글학교에 참여 중인 어르신 약 140명이 참석했다.
흰 종이 위에 ‘고향’과 ‘어머니’를 주제로 써 내려간 글에는 세월의 무게만큼이나 깊은 감정이 담겼다.
글을 쓰며 웃음을 터뜨리는 이도 있었고, 잊고 지냈던 추억에 눈시울을 붉히는 이도 있었다.
배움의 길 위에서 서로의 삶을 위로하고 격려하는 순간들이 행사장을 따뜻하게 물들였다.
대상의 영예는 고군면 지막리의 채복례 어르신에게 돌아갔다.
그는 “나이가 많다고 배움이 멈추는 건 아니다.”라며 “한글을 배우며 세상과 더 가까워졌고, 이렇게 큰 상까지 받아 감사하다.”고 수상 소감을 전했다.
그의 말은 현장에 있던 모든 이의 마음을 울렸다.
김희수 진도군수는 “배움의 열정을 잃지 않고 자신의 이야기를 글로 전하는 어르신들의 모습이 참으로 아름답다.”며 “이번 백일장이 글을 통한 소통과 배움의 기쁨을 함께 나누는 소중한 계기가 되었기를 바란다.”고 격려했다.
진도군은 그동안 배움의 기회를 놓쳤던 어르신들을 위해 군민한글학교와 성인문해교육을 꾸준히 운영해왔다.
단순한 글쓰기 교육을 넘어, 어르신들이 세상과 연결되고 자신감을 회복할 수 있는 ‘두 번째 배움의 문’을 열어주고 있다.
군은 앞으로도 문해 교육의 범위를 넓혀 어르신들의 사회참여를 활성화하고, 배움이 일상이 되는 평생학습 문화를 확산해 나갈 계획이다.

“Learning Has No Age Limit” – Jindo County Holds 11th Literacy School Writing Contest with Great Success
Jindo County hosted the 11th Jindo County Literacy School Writing Contest on Tuesday, November 11, at the county office’s main auditorium, filling the venue with warmth and heartfelt emotion.
The event provided elderly learners who recently began studying Korean with an opportunity to showcase their writing skills, sharing the joy of learning and the stories of their lives through the written word.
Approximately 140 senior participants from the county’s literacy program took part in the contest. With “Hometown” and “Mother” as the given themes, each participant poured a lifetime of memories and emotion onto the blank page. Some smiled as they wrote, others shed quiet tears as long-forgotten memories resurfaced — moments of encouragement and empathy that turned the hall into a scene of gentle compassion.
The grand prize went to Ms. Chae Bok-rye from Jimak-ri, Gogun-myeon, who expressed her gratitude, saying,
“Getting older doesn’t mean learning has to stop. Learning Hangul brought me closer to the world, and I’m so thankful to receive such a big award.”
Her heartfelt words deeply moved everyone in attendance.
Jindo County Mayor Kim Hee-soo praised the participants, saying,
“The sight of seniors expressing their stories through writing, without losing their passion for learning, is truly beautiful. I hope this event became a meaningful opportunity to share the joy of learning and communication.”
For years, Jindo County has offered literacy classes and adult education programs for elderly residents who missed the chance to learn in their youth. These programs go beyond simple reading and writing—they help seniors reconnect with society and regain confidence, opening the door to a “second chance at learning.”
The county plans to further expand its literacy programs, promote senior participation in community life, and foster a lifelong learning culture where education becomes a natural part of daily living.
