해남군은 고품질 마늘 생산을 위해 농가에 적정 파종 시기 준수와 철저한 종구(씨마늘) 선별·소독을 당부하고 있다.
군에 따르면 마늘은 파종 시기에 따라 생육과 수량, 품질이 크게 달라진다.
해남지역에서 주로 재배되는 난지형 마늘의 적정 파종 시기는 9월 하순부터 10월 중순까지다.
너무 일찍 파종하면 벌마늘이나 통 터짐이 늘어나고, 늦게 심으면 생육 지연과 월동력 약화로 동해 피해가 발생할 수 있다.
또한 건전한 씨마늘 선별과 철저한 사전 소독도 필수적이다. 씨마늘은 상처가 없고 모양이 고른 5~7g 크기가 적당하며, 지나치게 큰 마늘은 벌마늘 발생률을 높인다.
아울러 흑색썩음균핵병, 잎마름병, 뿌리응애 등 주요 병해충은 토양과 종구로부터 쉽게 감염되므로, 파종 전 반드시 본포 토양 소독과 종구 소독을 실시해야 한다.
군 관계자는 “적기 파종과 철저한 종구 관리가 고품질 마늘 생산의 핵심”이라며 “앞으로도 해남산 마늘의 경쟁력 강화를 위해 재배기술 보급과 적기 농작업 지도를 지속적으로 추진하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

Haenam County Urges Timely Planting and Seed Garlic Management for High-Quality Production
Haenam County is urging farmers to observe the proper planting period and thoroughly select and disinfect seed garlic to ensure high-quality garlic production.
According to the county, the growth, yield, and quality of garlic vary greatly depending on the planting time.
For Namji-type garlic, which is mainly cultivated in Haenam, the optimal planting period is from late September to mid-October. Planting too early can increase the occurrence of double bulbs or split cloves, while planting too late may delay growth, weaken winter hardiness, and cause frost damage.
Thorough preparation, including the selection of healthy seed garlic and prior disinfection, is also essential. The recommended seed garlic is free of damage, uniform in shape, and weighs about 5–7 grams. Oversized bulbs tend to increase the incidence of double bulbs.
In addition, major pests and diseases such as Sclerotium rot, leaf blight, and root mites are easily transmitted through soil and seed garlic. Therefore, both soil treatment and seed disinfection must be carried out before planting.
A county official stated, “Timely planting and thorough seed garlic management are the key to producing high-quality garlic. We will continue to strengthen technical support and guidance on timely farming practices to further enhance the competitiveness of Haenam garlic.”
