완도해양경찰서(서장 김길규)는 연일 이어지는 폭염 속에서도 해수욕장 폐장 이후 꾸준히 늘어나는 물놀이 피서객과 주꾸미 낚시객 증가에 대비해 육상·해상을 병행한 안전 점검 활동을 강화하고 있다고 7일 밝혔다.
김길규 서장은 지난 8월 30일 명사십리·사구미·송호 등 관내 폐장 해수욕장 3개소를 직접 방문해 위험구역 출입통제 및 안내시설 현황, 비상연락망 유지 여부, 안전표지판·구조장비 관리 상태 등을 점검했다.
또한 9월 6일에는 완도파출소 연안구조정을 이용해 해상 치안 점검을 실시하며, 주꾸미 낚시어선 주요 조업지의 안전관리, 폐장 해수욕장 인근 해역 순찰을 집중적으로 진행했다.
점검 과정에서는 구명조끼 착용 여부, 과승, 음주 조업 가능성 등을 확인했으며, 위험행위에 대해서는 현장 계도와 안전수칙 홍보를 병행했다.
특히 최근 완도 연안에서는 주꾸미 성어기를 맞아 낚시객이 크게 늘어나고 있다.
일부 낚시어선에서는 “주말이면 예약이 꽉 찰 정도로 손님이 몰린다.”며 안전관리에 어려움을 토로하고 있어, 해경의 집중 관리 필요성이 더욱 높아지고 있다.
김 서장은 “폐장 해수욕장은 안전 인력과 시설이 축소돼 사고 위험이 크고, 주꾸미 성어기를 맞은 해역 역시 낚시객 증가로 사고 가능성이 높다.”며, “연안구조정을 활용한 해상 순찰과 육상 점검을 지속적으로 강화해 사고 없는 안전한 바다 환경을 조성하겠다.”고 밝혔다.
한편 완도해경은 앞으로도 주말과 취약 시간대에 순찰 인력을 집중 배치하고, 지자체·유관기관과 협력체계를 강화해 해양사고 예방 활동을 이어갈 계획이다.

Wando Coast Guard Strengthens Safety Inspections at Closed Beaches and Octopus Fishing Grounds
― Comprehensive land and sea inspections to prevent maritime accidents ―
The Wando Coast Guard (Chief Kim Gil-gyu) announced on the 7th that it is strengthening safety inspections both on land and at sea to prevent maritime accidents, as visitors continue to flock to the beaches even after their official closure and the number of octopus fishing tourists increases amid ongoing heatwaves.
On August 30, Chief Kim visited three closed beaches in the jurisdiction—Myeongsashimni, Sagumi, and Songho—to inspect access restrictions to hazardous areas, the status of information facilities, the maintenance of emergency contact systems, and the management of safety signs and rescue equipment.
On September 6, he conducted maritime security checks using the Wando Police Precinct’s coastal rescue vessel, focusing on the safety management of major octopus fishing grounds and patrols around closed beaches. During the inspections, officers checked life jacket use, overcrowding, and possible drunk fishing, while also providing on-site guidance and promoting safety rules.
In particular, with the peak season for octopus fishing underway, the number of anglers along the Wando coast has sharply increased. Some fishing boat operators said, “On weekends, reservations are fully booked,” expressing difficulties in managing safety, which highlights the growing need for intensified Coast Guard oversight.
Chief Kim stated, “Closed beaches carry high accident risks due to reduced safety personnel and facilities, and fishing areas during the peak octopus season also see a heightened risk of accidents due to the surge in anglers. We will continue to strengthen both maritime patrols using coastal rescue boats and onshore inspections to create a safe maritime environment free of accidents.”
Meanwhile, the Wando Coast Guard plans to continue deploying patrol personnel during weekends and high-risk hours, while reinforcing cooperation with local governments and related agencies to prevent maritime accidents.
