진도군의 문화예술 저변을 넓히고 생활인구 유입 기반을 마련하는 ‘진도문화예술교육원’의 활동이 지역사회에서 주목받고 있다.

교육원은 지역의 전통문화예술을 생활 속에서 쉽게 접하고 배울 수 있도록 다양한 강좌 운영과 성과 발표회를 꾸준히 이어가며 ‘지역문화 플랫폼’으로 자리매김하고 있다.

■ 7개 예술강좌 운영… 주‧야간·주말까지 열린 문화교육
진도문화예술교육원은 군민 누구나 전통문화예술을 가까이에서 경험할 수 있도록 민요장구, 남도민요, 문인화, 한국화, 자개공예, 사진·영상, 설장구 등 총 7개 강좌를 개설해 주·야간은 물론 주말 프로그램까지 폭넓게 운영했다.

이 프로그램은 중장년층뿐 아니라 다양한 세대의 참여를 이끌며 지역 예술교육의 문턱을 낮췄다는 평가를 받는다.

■ 갈고닦은 실력 ‘한자리’… 성과발표회·예술 전시회 성황
지난 9일 개최된 성과발표회에서는 수강생들이 민요장구, 남도민요, 설장구 공연을 선보이며 그동안 갈고닦은 실력을 마음껏 뽐냈다.

또한 한국화 17점, 문인화 10점, 사진 7점, 자개공예 20여 점 등 수준 높은 작품들이 함께 전시돼 군민들의 큰 호응을 얻었다.

■ “전통문화의 중심지 진도”… 중장년층 예술 참여가 지역문화 기반 확장
교육원은 ‘시·서·화·창’ 전통예술의 본고장이라는 진도의 정체성을 바탕으로 중장년층의 적극적인 예술 참여를 유도하고 있다.

특히 예술교육을 단순한 취미 차원을 넘어 ‘지역 문화 기반 확대’와 ‘전통 예술의 미래 전승 주체 육성’이라는 장기적 목표로 접근하고 있다는 점에서 의미가 크다.

■ 생활인구 유입·정착 목표… 문화 활동가 양성도 병행
교육원은 지역의 문화홍보대사 역할을 수행할 ‘1인 1문화 지키기’ 인재를 발굴하고, 문화 활동가를 체계적으로 양성하는 데도 힘을 쏟고 있다.

장기간 지속 가능한 예술교육 프로그램을 통해 귀농·귀촌 등 생활인구 유입을 촉진하고, 문화 기반의 정주 여건을 강화한다는 계획이다.

■ “전통예술로 지역 활력 만들 것”
진도문화예술교육원 관계자는 “전통문화의 보존과 확산은 물론, 예술교육을 통해 군민의 삶을 풍요롭게 하고 지역 활력을 높이는 데 최선을 다하겠다.”며 “앞으로도 생활인구 유입에 기여하는 문화거점 역할을 강화하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

“From Traditional Arts to Population Growth… Transformation Begins at the Jindo Cultural Arts Education Center”
The Jindo Cultural Arts Education Center is drawing attention across the region as it expands the cultural and artistic base of Jindo County and builds a foundation for increasing its resident population.
The center has established itself as a ‘regional cultural platform’ by continuously offering various traditional arts classes and holding performance showcases, making local cultural arts more accessible in daily life.
■ Seven Arts Courses Offered… Open Cultural Education Across Days, Nights, and Weekends
The center provides opportunities for all residents to experience traditional culture up close by offering seven courses:
Minyo Janggu (folk drumming), Namdo Minyo (southern folk songs), Muninhwa (literati painting), Korean painting, nacre crafts, photography & video, and Seol Janggu.
These programs operate not only during the day but also in the evenings and on weekends, attracting participation from middle-aged learners as well as various age groups, thereby lowering barriers to cultural education.
■ A Showcase of Hard Work… Performances and Exhibitions Draw Praise
At the performance showcase held on the 9th, students proudly presented what they had learned through Minyo Janggu, Namdo Minyo, and Seol Janggu performances.
The accompanying exhibition—featuring 17 Korean paintings, 10 literati paintings, 7 photographs, and more than 20 nacre craftworks—also received strong positive feedback from the community.
■ “Jindo, the Home of Traditional Arts”… Cultural Base Expands Through Participation
Built on Jindo’s identity as a center of traditional arts—poetry, calligraphy, painting, and traditional singing—the center encourages active participation from middle-aged residents.
Importantly, the center views arts education not merely as a hobby, but as a long-term strategy to expand the region’s cultural foundation and nurture future bearers of traditional arts.
■ Toward Population Growth and Community Settlement… Training Cultural Ambassadors
The center is also dedicated to discovering local cultural ambassadors through its “One Person, One Cultural Skill” initiative and systematically training cultural activists.
By offering long-term, sustainable education programs, the center aims to encourage population inflow—such as return-to-farm and return-to-village settlers—and strengthen cultural elements that support community settlement.
■ “We Will Create Local Vitality Through Traditional Arts”
A representative from the Jindo Cultural Arts Education Center stated,
“We are committed to preserving and spreading traditional culture while enriching residents’ lives through arts education. We will continue to strengthen our role as a cultural hub that contributes to population growth in the region.”
