“10년의 땀, 해남 유기농 쌀의 자부심이 되다”

해남군 황산면에서 10여 년간 한결같이 친환경 농법을 지켜온 이병연(54세) 씨가 전라남도가 지정하는 ‘2025년 유기농 명인’으로 선정됐다.

‘전라남도 유기농 명인’은 지역의 유기농 현장을 이끌며 친환경농업 발전에 기여한 농업인에게 수여되는 최고 영예의 칭호다.

■ 왕우렁이·소식재배·교대간수법… 해남에서 피운 ‘유기농 벼 혁신’
이병연 명인은 화학비료와 농약을 전혀 사용하지 않는 완전 유기농 벼 재배로 유명하다.

그는 왕우렁이를 이용한 잡초 방제, 교대 간수법, 소식재배(稀植栽培) 등 다양한 친환경 재배기술을 실천해왔다.

이를 통해 병충해를 최소화하면서도 고품질 유기농 쌀을 안정적으로 생산하는 체계를 확립했다.

또한 일본 품종 ‘이노찌노이찌(Inochi no Ichi)’ 벼의 국내 라이선스를 취득해 지역 농가에 보급하고, 정윤영농조합법인을 설립해 6농가·50ha 규모의 유기농 단지를 조성하는 등 집단화된 유기농 벼 재배 모델을 완성했다.

■ 해남 대표 친환경농업인으로 ‘두 개의 대상’ 수상
이병연 명인은 2024년 해남군 친환경농업인 대상, 2025년 전라남도 농업인 대상을 잇따라 수상하며 지역 친환경농업의 대표 인물로 자리매김했다.

그는 “유기농업을 시작한 이후 한 길을 걸어온 노력이 인정받게 되어 감사하다.”며 “앞으로도 지속가능한 농업 환경을 지키고, 소비자에게 신뢰받는 안전한 쌀을 생산하겠다.”고 소감을 전했다.

■ 해남군, 유기농 명인 4명 배출… “친환경농업의 중심지로”
해남군 관계자는 “이병연 명인의 유기농 철학과 실천은 지역 농업인의 귀감이 되고 있다”며 “친환경농업 기반을 확대하고, 농업인들이 자긍심을 가지고 지속가능한 농업에 전념할 수 있도록 적극 지원하겠다.”고 밝혔다.

현재 해남군에는 김성래(배추), 김소영(한우), 박성관(오디), 이병연(벼) 등 총 4명의 전라남도 유기농 명인이 활동 중이다.

이로써 해남은 명실상부한 ‘전남 친환경농업의 중심지’로서 위상을 더욱 공고히 하고 있다.

Farmer Lee Byung-yeon Named Jeollanam-do ‘Organic Master,’ Leading the Spread of Eco-friendly Farming
Lee Byung-yeon (age 54), a rice farmer in Hwangsan-myeon, Haenam, has been honored as a “2025 Jeollanam-do Organic Master.”
This prestigious title is awarded to agricultural leaders who have systematized advanced organic farming practices and contributed significantly to the development of eco-friendly agriculture across the province.
■ Innovation in Organic Rice Cultivation – Weed Control with Golden Apple Snails, Alternate Irrigation, and Sparse Planting
Lee has earned a reputation for cultivating completely organic rice without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
He actively employs golden apple snails for natural weed control, alternate wetting and drying irrigation techniques, and sparse planting methods to minimize pests and diseases while ensuring high-quality, stable organic rice production.
In addition, Lee obtained the domestic license for the Japanese rice variety “Inochi no Ichi” and distributed it to local farmers.
Through the establishment of Jeongyoon Agricultural Cooperative, he helped form a 50-hectare organic rice complex with six participating farms, creating a collective model for sustainable organic rice production.
■ Recognized as Haenam’s Leading Eco-friendly Farmer with Two Major Awards
Lee’s dedication to sustainable agriculture has earned him both the 2024 Haenam Eco-friendly Farmer Award and the 2025 Jeollanam-do Farmer Award, solidifying his role as a pioneer of organic agriculture in the region.
“I’m deeply grateful that my long-standing commitment to organic farming has been recognized,” said Lee.
“I will continue to protect the environment and produce safe, trustworthy rice that consumers can rely on.”
■ Four Organic Masters from Haenam – “Becoming the Center of Eco-friendly Agriculture in Jeonnam”
A Haenam County official remarked, “Mr. Lee’s philosophy and practices in organic farming serve as an exemplary model for local farmers. We will continue to expand the foundation of eco-friendly agriculture and support farmers in taking pride in sustainable practices.”
Currently, four Jeollanam-do Organic Masters hail from Haenam:
Kim Seong-rae (Cabbage), Kim So-young (Korean Cattle), Park Seong-gwan (Mulberry), and Lee Byung-yeon (Rice).
With these achievements, Haenam has firmly established itself as the leading hub of eco-friendly agriculture in Jeollanam-do.
