완도해양경찰서(서장 김길규)는 17일 오전 10시 완도해경 전용부두에서 자체 개발한 ‘폼 소화장비’를 활용한 화재 진압 훈련을 실시했다고 20일 밝혔다.

완도해경에 따르면, 그동안 해상 화재 진압 시 주로 사용해온 분말형 또는 CO₂ 소화 장비는 FRP(섬유강화플라스틱) 선체에서 발생한 화재에 효과가 제한적이라는 한계가 지속적으로 제기돼 왔다.

이에 완도해경은 현장 중심의 대응력을 확보하기 위해 기존 배수펌프의 해수 유입 장치에 약제 혼합 밸브를 추가해, 해수와 소화 약제를 동시에 분사할 수 있는 ‘폼 소화 장비’를 자체 제작했다.

이날 훈련은 완도해경서장 및 각 기능별 담당자가 참석한 가운데 진행됐으며, 기존 장비(유처리제 살포기·에어폼 노즐)와의 분사력 비교 화재 진압 성능 점검, 운용 안정성 검증 등이 실시됐다.

특히 FRP 자재를 활용한 모의 화재 상황을 부여해 실제 해상 조건과 유사한 환경에서 성능을 집중 점검한 결과, 폼 소화 장비는 해수와 약제가 균일하게 혼합·분사돼 연소 억제력과 냉각 효과에서 우수한 성능을 보인 것으로 확인됐다.

완도해경 관계자는 “현장 실정에 맞는 소화 장비를 직접 개발하고 그 효과를 검증한 데 큰 의미가 있다”며 “향후 장비 개선과 확대 보급을 적극 추진해 해상 화재 대응력을 높이고, 국민의 생명과 재산을 지키는 데 최선을 다하겠다.”고 말했다.

Wando Coast Guard Conducts First Field Training with Self-Developed “Foam Firefighting Equipment” —
Innovative Breakthrough in FRP Vessel Fire Response
The Wando Coast Guard (Chief Kim Gil-gyu) announced on the 20th that it conducted a fire-suppression drill on the 17th at 10 a.m. at the Wando Coast Guard pier, utilizing its newly developed foam-type firefighting equipment.
According to the Wando Coast Guard, conventional fire extinguishers such as powder-based or CO₂ types have been widely used during maritime fire responses. However, these systems have shown limitations in effectively suppressing fires occurring on FRP (Fiber-Reinforced Plastic) vessel hulls.
In response, the Wando Coast Guard developed a customized alternative for field conditions by installing an additional valve on the existing dewatering pump’s seawater intake, enabling seawater and foam extinguishing agents to be mixed and sprayed simultaneously. This resulted in the creation of the Coast Guard’s own foam firefighting equipment.
The drill was carried out in the presence of the Wando Coast Guard Chief and related department officials, and included performance evaluations such as spray-power comparison with existing equipment (oil dispersant sprayers and air-foam nozzles), fire-suppression capability tests, and operational safety checks.
In particular, a mock fire scenario using FRP materials was staged to simulate real maritime conditions. As a result, the new foam equipment demonstrated superior performance, evenly mixing and discharging seawater and extinguishing agents, showing excellent flame-suppression capability and cooling effects.
A Wando Coast Guard spokesperson stated, “This initiative is meaningful in that we developed and verified firefighting equipment tailored to on-scene conditions,” adding, “We will continue to improve and expand the deployment of this equipment to strengthen maritime fire response and fulfill our mission of safeguarding the lives and property of the public.”
